I recently bought a 2016 XC90 and the secondary battery had been recently replaced by the previous owner. The main battery was reading about 12.2 volts, even after a complete recharge using an AGM charger. The Auto S/S was also mostly not working.. I bought a new N8 battery from Costco at a good price and discovered that the factory original was a N7. I would have thought that Canada would have come with the larger battery.
The larger battery fit with a small mod, it needed a tie-down-strap which I was able to install. I watched a video on the battery R&R and the presenter suggested a keep-alive battery or power supply to keep the programming from being reset. I naively thought that the extra battery up front would have done that job, but it did not. It took about an hour to complete the job except later that day I realized that I had forgotten to reattach the vent hose.
When done, I hooked up my ODB2 device and checked for DTC's and had a whole pile of them to reset, no doubt because I had no keep-alive battery.
But, I was still concerned about resetting the BMS system and after a lot of searching I settled on a Foxwell NT530. It is a lot more comprehensive than my older Icarsoft unit, and it comes with a BMS reset feature that works. So, I selected the Service parameter, Battery, Vehicle SOC, voltage and current history, and I could see that the battery had been Reset 24 days earlier.
My point is that disconnecting the main battery for 30-60 minutes on a MY 2016- XC90 will reset the BMS!! In my case, I recharged the battery again and then reset the BMS one more time with the NT530.
