Repairing High Oil Consumption with Fuel and Oil Additives - 6 month update - it works!

Six months ago I shared that using Liqui-Moly ProLine Engine Flush helped with my oil consumption issue on my 5 cylinder Volvo. Well, now that some time has passed, I can give an update.

Around 1 quart got consumed after 2500 miles. After adding Liqui-Moly ViscoPlus, I have not burned any oil after driving 1500 more miles.

I now have an improved procedure for fixing this issue:
  1. Lift the car with a jack and jack stands or ramps.
  2. Next, add a bottle of Liqui-Moly ProLine Engine Flush to the engine oil and idle the engine for 15 minutes.
  3. Drain the engine oil. Be careful as the oil will be hot!
  4. Remove the oil filter. A low profile 36mm socket and a flex head ratchet or a regular ratchet with universal joint and extension is required.
  5. Reinstall the drain plug and belly pan with a new aluminum crush washer.
  6. Install the new oil filter.
  7. Add a 300ml can of Liqui-Moly Viscoplus for Oil.
  8. Add new oil of your choice. I have had good results with both Castrol and Liqui Moly oil.
  9. Add a can of fuel system cleaner and top up the tank with gasoline. Any cleaner with a lot of PEA in it will work. RedLine and Techron are popular.
  10. Drive around. Recycle used oil properly!
A lower oil change interval is also useful to preventing oil consumption. An extractor pump will leave 100ml or so of old oil in the crankcase, but extracting oil halfway between Volvo's recommended 10k oil changes should be enough.

This works because Volvo did not design their oil control ring correctly. The oil control ring becomes fouled with carbon deposits, and oil ends up in the combustion chamber instead of being scraped down the cylinder wall. Engine flush will remove years of built-up deposits from the oil control ring.

The fuel system cleaner contains PEA, a detergent which can break up carbon deposits in the combustion chamber which result from oil consumption. These deposits can cause spark plug fouling, clogged injectors and other issues.

Since some oil is burnt and sent through the exhaust, it is essential that any oil or additives used are labeled as safe for catalytic converters!

...the newly launched 100K oil consumption extended warranty just launched by Volvo. Check with your local Volvo Retailer for details.
Are you referring to an extended warranty contract? Which contract did you buy and what was its cost?

I think it's an extended warranty being provided by Volvo to original owners with less than 100k miles at no cost, possibly to get out in front of the class action lawsuit that was filed.

Volvo should really issue a press release describing the program in detail.
Interested to see the details of this - the google shows nothing as of now.
Too vague. 5-cylinder engines and not the notorious 4s? Go ask a dealer?

Did the same on my 2015 Volvo S60 T5 Platinum AWD 5 cylinder. I bought the car used with 96K miles car was burning a quart every 750 to 1100 miles and I did not knew about this issue previously because I never had this issue with my S90. I have all the service records from the Previous Owner Car was Serviced every 10K miles up to 90K miles at Volvo dealer and all the services were performed as per Manual.
Around 99k miles I did Liquimoly engine flush and flushed the engine oil after 20 Mins idle and periodically revving the engine up to 2000 RPM in between every 5 mins and was holding the rev at 2k for may be 30 seconds and flushed the used oil. Added new castrol 5W-30 ACEA A5/B5 5.8 quarts oil, new K&N oil filter and added 300 ml of moly Viscoplus. When I checked the dip stick oil was exactly up to the MAX mark.
Now after 1500 miles of driving my car has burned 250 ml of oil. I am down one Point down from Max and the oil level is holding at 4th XX mark. I have also used Red line fuel cleaning concentrate , Liqui moly Fuel system cleaner and Liquimoly jectron in last 1500 miles. Atleast by current results I can say that consumption is down significantly.
I am planning to do EPR flush after driving an other 1500 miles. I will post the results here.
Fingers Crossed.

This is great news... But I've just tried my first round of Liqui Flush + shift to their 4 - 40 and... drumroll... it did nothing! Same result, over a quart per thousand miles. Prior to experimenting w/ any further "treatments" I'm going to surrender to the Volvo protocols, going to a dealer to do their "Oil Consumption" test and move on from there. It's not clear what, if any, the end game from there might be. If I'm simply dispatched to left field, so be it, I'll then go the additive route full bore. Stay tuned.

has anyone tried this method with a 2015-2016 v60 t5?

If you have the 5 cylinder, it is the same engine and may work.

4 cylinder has a more serious problem that will only be solved with a rebuild.
has anyone tried this method with a 2015-2016 v60 t5?
To my knowledge the 4cylinders had ring and piston issues leading to not just consumption but scoring on the cylinder wall.

All the 5 cylinder engines burn oil for this reason, which is why an engine flush and reduced oil change intervals work. You can also try BG's engine flush which has good reviews as well.

A mechanic friend told me that he would pour a quart of diesel into the crankcase and drive around for 50 miles then proceed with the oil change. Another used transmission fluid instead of the diesel fuel.

I've used transmission fluid in the past but the best was Swepco 502 Premium Engine Oil Improver. You can choose to use it in the dirty oil or after the oil change. Either way drive it for around 500 miles and change it out.

Before this mention of an extended warranty gratis becomes internet myth, has anyone received anything in writing or found an official Volvo announcement online that can be shared?

No, but a post above from a senior VCNA employee would be enough for me to bring my car to the dealer if it had this issue. I don't think it's an internet myth.

I doubt a printout of this thread is going to sway my dealer. I agree with your prior comment that we'll want to see the press release.
There's a letter from Volvo dated Feb3 about this issue. 100k or 8 years from original vehicle in-service date.

There's a thread about it on this forum.

It's too late for my car unfortunately, it's 9 years old.
May finally have made headway with additives…

last 3 flushes with liqui moly did nothing, tried BG EPR + ~120 miles holding 4k rpm mostly highway split 60 miles before and 60 after the flush/change. 600 miles later, oil's only down 2 croshatches/~2/5 quart in 600 miles, vs the 1/5 quart every ~200 miles im used to. Bit early to celebrate, but it's been quite consistent up until now. Other thing is, if anything I should be seeing more consumption running 4k rpm even if only for 60 miles after. Not using any viscosity modifiers, castrol edge 5w-30 euro.
Interesting. I haven't tried BG although it has a good reputation in the shop. At its worst, my car burned a full quart in about 1200 to 1500 miles. I'm on my 4th LiquiMoly flush/2,500mile oil change interval and today, 1860 miles into the oil change interval, I have used half a quart. And that is with over 1000 miles of high speed driving, which tends to burn more. So I think you can make progress if you keep at it.
