http://www.formula1.com/news/h....html
Somewhat of a surprise former and not a surprise on the latter.
Renault has won their appeal that the penalty for Alonso being released without his wheel retainer was too draconian and it has been replaced with a reprimand and a fine. I say good, I thought that the original penalty was way too harsh.
Along with that comes the news that Piquet has been dropped. Certainly no surprise there, but no announcement on his replacement. Hmm.

This is good news. A fine is more appropriate than a race ban.

Spain will be very happy! I too thought a race ban was overkill.
Piquet has never impressed me, and I am not sad to see him go. Don't know why he was soooo slow but I guess when you get compared to a driver like Alonso you are going to have it rough.

More crazy-ass Renault news!!
Apparently they are being charged with fraudulent manipulation of the 2008 Singapore race, claiming that Renault told Piquet to crash in order to deploy the safety car to help Alonso.
Jeebus, could it get any crazier?
http://www.formula1.com/news/h....html

Piquet has said that he was instructed to crash - if this turns out to be a lie (meaning he made it up), no other team will hire him.
Now Pat Symonds is saying that the crash was Piquet's idea
http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/he...shtml
Oh this is an absolute mess!

For me, this confirms that piquet is telling the truth. Flavio and Symonds are attempting to cop to the (perceived) lesser offense of letting one of their driver's try and fix the race (and not reporting piquet's plan to race officials) versus being the instigator's of the race fixing.
No where do they deny that Renault was involved in fixing the race, only that it was Piquet's idea.
If Bernie and Max had any ethics at all, Flavio and Symonds (and any other Renault team members that were involved) would receive lifetime bans and Piquet would receive a 1-2 year ban.

I agree.
I don't think Piquet would come up with this idea himself.
Since Renault is not denying the fixing and saying its Piquet's fault they themselves are the guilty ones.
Nice sh*t storm they are in now.

So Piquet wanted to intentionally crash thus risking possible injury to himself? Somehow, I don't think so.

Re: Renault F1 News....They will Race and no more Piquet (John2x240)

Flavio and Renault have commenced criminal proceedings in France against Piquets Jr. and Sr. for making false accusations and blackmail.
http://www.autoweek.com/articl...19996
How is it that an individual (rather than the State) can commence criminal proceedings? Those Napoleonic Codes must have some weird sh!t in them.
Me thinketh thou doth protestesth too much, Flavio. If the Piquet's were actually blackmailing Flavio, why didn't Flavio bring the charges at that point in time? Because then the race fixing would have come to light.
Flavio got himself in a jam. He likely promised Piquet a ride for the 2009 season if Piquet took one for the team. Problem is Piquet sucks as a driver and the team's poor results in 2009 were causing Renault to think of pulling out of F1. What is Flavio to do? Fire Piquet and hire a French driver, that should appease Renault, no? But if he fires Piquet, Piquet might talk, but Piquet wouldn't talk because he would be implicating himself in a race fixing scandal, right?
Never underestimate a person's ability to cut off their nose to spite their face.
The only way out for Flavio was to get Grosjean in the car without pissing of the Piquets. He should have told Piquet to fake an injury, paid him a ton of cash and promised to help him get another F1 ride. But he was too cheap and bet that Piquet would never talk about the race fixing because it would be career suicide.
No matter what happens now, no one will hire Piquet again and I bet Flavio and Symonds are through in F1 also. Whether that is by punishment or market forces (Renault withdrawing from F1) remains to be seen.

John2x240, causing an accident that will not physically harm oneself is no problem in a modern F1 car; they are that safe. The key was where to cause the accident. Piquet was allegedly told to crash in a specific location on the track (a street circuit) where no crane was available to hoist the car, thus requiring the safety car period that allow Alonso to win the race.
Piquet is a slime-ball for going along with the plan in exchange for a ride this season, but Flavio and Symonds are worse.
I think Piquet is telling the truth.

Re: Renault F1 News....They will Race and no more Piquet (BarentsBlueV50)

Here is a link to a video of the crash. It looks like he hit the gas too hard and looped it coming out of the corner.
http://timesonline.typepad.com....html
There was a lot of speculation at the time that it was intentional. I wonder if Renault saved the telemetry from that race weekend. How do Piquet's throttle inputs around the time of the crash compare to the other times he negotiated that corner that weekend?

Re: Renault F1 News....They will Race and no more Piquet (BarentsBlueV50)

I guess there are some who would do something like this for lots of money, but my mind doesn't want to accept that any driver, even at the amateur level, would risk an injury that could take him/her out of racing for ever. Racing is not just a job or a hobby, it's a passion, and again even at the amateur level, and the thought of not being able to race due to injury, finances, or whatever other reason, is something that all the drivers I've know dread to face. Of course, Piquet could be one of the few who are willing to take such a risk for money, so who knows?
Oh yeah, I don't know much about the French legal system, but in most countries who's justice system is based on the British one, anyone can swear out an information for a criminal offence, and then it's up to the police and Crown Attorney (District Attorney) to proceed if they feel that there are probable grounds.

Re: Renault F1 News....They will Race and no more Piquet (GrecianVolvo)

I think Flavio is going to skate on this one. Speed's coverage this weekend (and other media reports) made mention of his close relationship with Bernie. Bernie made comments to the effect this weekend that he did not believe the allegations.
Bernie supported Max through his Nazi bondage scandal last year, so Max does a cursory hearing to make it look like F1 and the WMSC are run above board, when they are, in fact, not. Viola! Renault, Flavio and Symonds are all acquitted and Piquet is blackballed.
