Is there a way to enable remote start using just the keyfob, or do you have to pay the subscription & get the Volvo app? Seems like a lot to pay for a feature that comes standard on most other cars. I thought I read here that someone was able to program their remote to start the car (from nearby)?

And speaking of the Volvo app, how can I pay/activate it if I choose to go that route? Is there a way to do this myself, or do I need to see the dealer for this?

Thanks!

Hi there,

Did you have it installed. What do you think?

Sebastian
I have it in my car. If you are handy at all and can solder, do it yourself. Took me maybe 40 minutes. They have a video that shows how. It’s all done under passenger front scuff plate. It has worked flawlessly. It is good for 50 feet or so. I use it to start car from inside my house in the winter. Cheap, no subscription, no brainer. I don’t want a paid app or something that doesn’t work off grid.

Love the idea.

My biggest concern would be any effect on warranty.

My car is a 2018, out of warranty. I never buy extended warranties and have owned several high end German luxury. The one car that was a problem child, BMW 535xi I sold after the first few thousand in repairs. Roll of the dice for me…….

Thanks, this is exactly what I'm looking for as well. No problem with the soldering part. Car soon out of warranty anyways.
Was mainly wondering about reliability and sounds like it has worked very well, great!

The only big question-mark is how it's going to behave on a T8, guess I'll have to be the first one to try it out, the company couldn't tell.

Cheers

In the VoC app it says the following for the Climate remote start for the T8:
If the car is connected to a charger, the ICE will not start (for security reasons), but heating will, and run for 30min.
If the car is not connected to a charger, the ICE will start.

Hoping this remote would behave the same so I could pre-heat the cabin during the winter without needing VoC.

We had XC90 and Q7 at the same time. The Volvo app was one of not so many features that I dearly miss after we sold XC. The ability to start (and condition) the car from far away. I had huge open parking lot at my office and in the summer heat car would be cooled down for after work ride, or heated up including seats/steering, ice would melt of the windshield in a winter. Send directions from phone to navi system.. I know other brands don't charge for that, but I don't think it's expensive option for features it offers. btw Audi app is crap, doesn't do anything what Volvo does. Hey, but it's free...

So....have you tried it out yet?

I just purchased a 2018 S90 T8 and would like to add this remote start, but would feel better about purchasing it if I can find someone that has actually tested it on a T8.

Thanks,
Cody

Yeah see my reply here.. :/

And it seems MCE doesn’t have much interest to invest more time in it, just for us T8 owners..

If I find some time, maybe I could try to do some CAN sniffing myself.. Maybe it would just be a matter of replacing the replay command with a different message in the module..

Well that's a bummer. Especially for you since you're the one who spent the money.

If you figure anything out with the CAN, that would be awesome. I'm not really any help with something like that.

I'll send an email to MCE just to let them know there is at least one more person out there who would buy their product if they get it working for a T8.

Maybe this will work for me since the Volvo app never does.
For me, it worked every single time I tried it (without charging cable plugged..), which I think is better result than via the app as you mention..
When you say never, you really mean never or just some times?
If it never works, I guess it sounds like there is a problem somewhere..

I'm sure there's a problem. I think it worked once. The app said the car was in power save mode for a month and couldn't talk to it, even though I reset the modem, uninstalled and reinstalled the app 57 times etc...I think the car might be parked in a spot that has bad ATT reception and things get stuck in a weird state.

Kind of a pointless effort now. My subscription runs out in 6 months, and given my experience with it I certainly won't be paying for it and a cell plan after that just for remote start function.
