For those with an ECU reflash, please note that by performing the software upgrade for campaign 135B, part number 30677038-9 (PK135B) - it will remove the enhancements of your ECU.
My service advisor noted that this might happen and I agreed to have the upgrade performed. Boy what a difference the IPD reflash made. The XC now feels restrained - while perhaps a better match for the software programming of the tranmission, the stock 2.5T boost levels are noticeably lower and as I mentioned, the SUV feels as though its holding back. I'll see how the fuel economy is doing and any other "stock" characteristics -- its been so long that I forgot what it was like to drive with the stock ECU settings.
So - for those with the IPD reflash or other ECU reprogramming, take into consideration if you have not had this service performed yet - our XC90 was in for its 37,500 check-up. There were a total of 6 TSBs that my 2003 2.5T required:
135C - Headlamp pump fuse
135B - Software upgrade
135I - seat belt guides
135H - Floor vent
135F - upper tailgate latch
157 - Tie rod ends
The recent steering rack recall notice does not seem to apply to my VIN.
All-in-all still love driving XC90, even on reduced boost.... for now.

Campaign 135!? That was in, like, 2004!
There's another reflash to fix an evaporative purge issue which causes CARB compliance failures. The number escapes me but it's something else to look out for. It was released last summer.
Tom.

I just don't get it. How much did you pay IPD for software, that did nothing more than advance the timing?
Then the quote 'enhancement' was wiped out with a new download from Volvo.
Maybe I'm showing my age (57).... but you guy's haven't demonstrated any add on, that is worth investing in!

The computer advances the timing without the reprogramming. Modern engines run on the edge of pinging all the time, that is why they all have knock sensors. Also this is why you can run regular fuel and not have a knock, and then switch back to premium and have the engine take advantage of the
higher octane by advancing the timing to just before knocking.
What the reprogramming does is allow more boost and more fuel to be added, thus more power. Too bad the trans doesnt have a reprogram to make it stronger. The added power will shorten the life of any component, engine, trans, and the rest of the drive train. When you play, you have to pay.

This is exactly why I decided to go with BSR's PPC ECU upgrade. In 3 minutes I will have the ECU "reflashed" in the comfort of my own home, eh garage. No need to resend the ECU to the shop each time there is an software upgrade.

Understand, I'm not trying to be a downer. Actually it's the other way!
These hi-tech cars are so good, it's almost impossible to improve upon their performance.
Yes, someone can tweak a performance curve - with fuel to air raitos, and a little bit of timing advance. But you are gonna have the same basic car.
The XC-90 is an SUV - it's a 'boat'. Then again, it's probably in the top 2.5% of all cars sold. It's really hard to improve perfection.
Sorry if I offend the poster!

doug....
you're missing a major thing...
Turbo boost! I think the only way for you to understand what this type of ecu upgrade can do is to drive a turbocharged engine that's been tuned. Then you'll be a believer.
Go have a beer
Tim

You obviously have not driven one of these "modern" cars with an ECU modification - the difference is noticeable and documentable. I have not driven a T6 before & after a reflash but on the 2.5T the IPD reflash takes the stock 208hp/236ft/lbs up to 245hp/310ft/lbs and is a performance improvement that can be felt. Audi, Subaru other turbo equipped cars also gain 30-60+hp from ECU remapping and thats nothing to downplay. There is an SS S60R owner who just tuned his ECU, combined with bolt-ons, to 318whp (horsepower at the wheels) where stock Rs have put down 230-250whp as a baseline. Almost 100whp -- remove the drivetrain loss and you have crank horsepower close to 400.
The normally aspirated engeines, such as the XC90 V8, there is probably little that can be done with an ECU but for turbo equipped cars the story is quite different. These motors are tuned pretty well out of the box.
I'm not offended, just want to make sure we've got the facts straight
As for the cost of my ECU upgrade, lets just say my wallet is not as heartbroken as my performance addiction As kaitsu mentioned, a handheld device is ideal for a planned or accidental Volvo reflash that clears out the ECU enhancements.

So are you not going to send the ECU back to IPD for reflash? I would think that they have a policy of free re-re-flashing due to dealer wipes. The VW/Audi tuners have this policy since you've paid for the SW already. Maybe it's just a matter of a few more days for you to reallllly miss the added power?
