I am looking to replace the Michelins (18" MXV4, I think) that came with the car. I run studded snows during winter here in Vermont, and want something that will ride, handle, and last well. Looking good is a plus, as is low cost. Any suggestions/experience?

You might hit up Tirerack.com and look through the reviews of each tire.
We have the 19" P-Zeros on our Sport and I love the look, but price/wear rate aren't going to be your friend I don't think, but we've only had it for a few months.
I've had good luck with Yokohamas on light truck tires in the past, just FYI.

We bought the General Altimax HPs from tirerack. Pretty inexpensive and have great reviews. We've been happy with them so far.
However, they are good all season tires with excellent snow ratings. This was part of my buying decision. If you are going to run snow tires, then you may want to go with sportier tires for the summer.
You might take a look if Sumitomo makes a sporty tire in the size you need. I've been running their HTR Zs during the summer on my G35X. They've seen quite a few autocrosses, a track day, and consistent hard street driving. They wear like iron!
If you have the 18" wheels, I strongly recommend Goodyear's Eagle ResponsEdge. Not sure how they'd do in a Vermont winter, but for all forms of dry/wet I've thrown at them, they've been stellar. UTQG is 440, so they'll wear a bit better than most of the other offerings.

Goodyear's Assurance Comfortred, 235/60-18.
Per Tirerack excellent reviews and 80K mileage warranty. Sams Club is running a $50 rebate on a set of four.
Kevin
Lot's of threads on Tires. I made same inquiry about a month ago...
I went thru a set of the GY Eagle Resp Edge in about 22k Miles ( 2 yrs) and while they were fine for the first Boston Winter, no so great in the second winter....
I've narrowed it down to GY Assurance Triple Tread or Nokians new SUV All Season... Nokians are expensive, Gy Assurance Trip Treads almast as expense but supposed to last longer.
Nor sure which are better for summer highway trips.
Good Luck

I was very happy with the 17" Nokians on my prev XC90. Fantastic in the snow, and decent all around. Not sure if they come in the 18" size.
I did not find them to cost any more than the avg Michelin.

Not sure which Nokians you are speaking of but I just purchased the WR G2s, stock 18" size at Tire Factory $249 ea. which includes 50k mileage warranty, road hazard, mounting and balancing, meaing that price is out the door, total. Tires by web had them for $215 ea. including shipping, but no road hazard and you have to pay for mounting, which came out to a push, almost ( better road hazard at tire factory and tiresbyweb wants 30% for theirs, which is about standard now).
Also, can't speak of course for the performance in snow as yet, and we don't get that much here usually.
