I've tried to search the forums but for some reason I can't search within just the R section so sorry to have to ask this question again.

I'm booking the car in a for service at Volvo but given their lack of knowledge of R cars, I think they may not put the best possible oil in my car so I would rather buy my own. What would be the absolute best oil I could put in my R?

You will get arguments about which is the "best", but I use a synthetic. My choice is Mobil 1 and have used it with good results for years. Porsche and some other car companies put Mobil 1 in their cars straight from the factory. If it is good enough for them it is good enough for me, but you will get other answers. There are plenty of threads on this subject too. I think it is somewhat personal preference.

i use German Castrol 0w-30 in my V70R. if your getting service at Volvo they will use what is recomended in there Volvo branded jug. I am thinking about switching to Amsoil'S 0w30, just because that is what i run in the other 2 cars in the family.

I have used Mobil 1 10w 30 in all my turbo Volvos for the past 12 years or so and it's worked fine.

i've had great luck with Rotella T6 5w40 in the blue bottle. No consumption between changes whatsoever. Works awesome in my R and the wife's C70 T5. Mobil1 is also great, Amsoil as well. Any of the higher end synthetics will do the trick to be honest. Adjust your viscosity based on your climate. In Texas, 5w40 is perfect for most of the year. In that brief few months where it's below 45deg i'll switch to Mobil1 5w30 most likely.

I think Volvo brand is Castrol. Says it on the oil fill cap too right?? But you are better off buying it yourself. At least here in the states volvo rapes you to do a synthetic oil change. I saw the ad or whatever when i was in the dealer..its like 100$ or more...

Owner's manual shows 10w 30 as the best bet but eveyone has their preferences.

I'm using Castrol Edge 0W-30 "European Formula," 'cause the caR is from Europe, of course. No single "best" choice, I'm sure you'll be fine with any of the recommendations.

My car has been serviced at a Volvo specialist shop for the past 60,000 miles. They only work on volvos and seem to know quite a bit about my R. They use a synthetic blend oil, I talked to the mechanic and he seemed confident that as long as I changed it regularly it would be fine. I don't drive my car hard, its my daily driver, but I have owned other cars before where I would only use fully synthetic (good **** too, like royal purple). Anyway my question is, since I'm just regularly driving the car (and occasionally getting on it) will it be fine with the blend at higher miles (almost 100k) or should I switch to fully synthetic?
