I know a bunch of us are headed over soon and its good to hear about folks returning from their OSD trip. I'm heading in early May and looking for some more recent dinner recommendations and things to do around the Gothenburg area. Most of the stuff I've read is pre-covid and trip advisor is pretty quiet too!

As for our plans: we are planning a few nights in Gothenburg before heading down to Varberg (a cute town about an hour south of Gothenburg right on the coast). I used to travel and stay in Varberg for work and they have a fortress, nice walking trails by the coast, great hotel with spa / pools. After that we hop over to Norway for some hiking.

Lots of good food options there. Volvo will treat you to dinner at the Noot at Radisson Blu, excellent food there. We also happened to stumble across Fiskekrogen, great seafood michelle rated. Lot of other options in walking distances but can be closed based on timing, many places close early evening.

I can't give you anything current. But when I went in 2019, my dinner from Volvo was at Norda in the Post Hotel. I only stayed in Gothenburg for two nights before heading out so for the second night I at vRA (also in the Post Hotel.) That was amazing sushi and sake! I have a client that works for Volvo Trucks that recently moved to the USA. They recommend I go to Rada Gelato (Brain Freeze) next time I visit. Landsvägsgatan 38, 413 04 Göteborg, Sweden. If I remember correctly , they said that area has some other great dining choices.

Take a drive around Lygnern with your new car. Popular among bikers and car enthusiasts.
Tjolöholms Castle is nearby.

Visit Carlstens Fästnining at Marstrand, some nice resturants there aswell.

Dinner Cruise around Hisingen (if the weather is good). Walking distance from the hotell

Saab Museeum in Trollhättan (2h drive) maybe, some nice roads up there aswell if you take the small roads.

Almost forgot Ramberget, nice view of the City.

This is where the locals eat ;)

We've been combing over travel blogs and you tube for ideas as well! One spot we came across that we definitely want to try is SK Mat & Manniskor. I also came across Saluhallen Market Hall that looked like an interesting place to pop in a time or two for lunch - lots of options there. Interested to see some suggestions from others that have been recently!

don't overlook the spa in the Post if you're staying there. It's awesome and they give you a free hour in their "relax" area (spa, sauna, steam room) with any paid treatment of 45 minutes or more. We spent the better part of a very rainy afternoon there. Also, the Post (and the Radisson I think) are right across the street from two major soccer stadiums (Ullevi). Traveling with our teenage son, we took in a game with a relatively minor club (GAIS) and felt like locals (with the exception that we didn't understand anything anyone was saying)! Didn't love Norda. As Volvo guests, they limited us to a set menu that didn't really suit our tastes (for example, the appetizer was steak tartare, which I'm sure was lovely but we don't really eat). We just bought extra snacks at the game. :) I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. It was fine. And even in hindsight I wouldn't ask for another hotel based on the restaurant because the Post has so much to commend it.

The other hotel (Gothia Towers) is right across the street from an amusement park, and I think Volvo provides 4 tickets to it when its open. It didn't look very nice to us, but if traveling with children that might be a great way to spend a day, especially if Volvo treats!

The restaurant at the Post is excellent. My wife does not drink alcohol, and I usually don't when I'm with her. A particular highlight for us was that they offered to "pair" various non-alcoholic juices and beverages with each course. I thought that was really thoughtful, and it was delicious.

The lunch at the delivery center was pretty good, too.

Don't miss the factory tour (if they still do it).
Was not aware about he pairing, but the lemonade they gave me was excellent.

I’m planning my own trip for delivery July 5th and am curious to see what anyone recommends for good driving. I’d like to go for a few drives in the area on the 5th and 6th but nothing too crazy.

My own research has me interested in Feskekora for seafood, and SK Mat & Manniskor for new Nordic

I’ve also seen multiple people refer to the high quality of the spa at the hotel we get a free night at.

A boat tour could be interesting although it’s not necessarily my go to thing.

And you have to have a few cinnamon or cardamom buns from somewhere. They are really really great.

If you’re not going to just stay at the Post, Gothenburg has some cool hotels for sure if you like the vibe. I’m going to stay at the Dorsia, and there’s the Pigalelle which apparently has some weird/theatrical elements?
At the Factory Delivery Center both days we were there they had (just for Overseas Delivery guests) a plate full of cinnamon buns up where the hot drinks station is located. I think the Swedes like their pastries on the dry side but they go good with hot chocolate. Unfortunately you usually have to supply your own chocolate powder but most places do provide the hot water.

If you like swimming you might ask when you check in if the rooftop pool is available. I asked if there was an extra charge and the answer was, "Not for you." Not sure if we were being treated special or if that is true for all Volvo sponsored guests. Anyway we swam at sunset which was spectacular to watch. Although the air was quite cold the water was well heated.

This is my favourite place and have been there quite a few times. Maybe a 10 minute walk to the west from the Post Hotel or Radisson, at Kronhusgatan 2B. Creative food and great selection of beers. There's a back story to this: in one of our OSD trips we were out in the evening looking for a urban Geocache, and having troubles finding it. There was someone nearby watching us (and obviously seeing our frustration). They ended up asking us if we were looking for a Geocache and we said yes - he was the cache owner! We had a great chat with him and when we asked about someplace local to have a bite to eat with some beers, he told us about this place, and actually walked us over to it. Did I mention they have a great selection of beers?! 🍻🍺 Whilst the web site is in Swedish (you can use Chrome to translate it) everyone there speaks English, and they have English menus and beer lists. You can make a reservation ... currently they are closed on Sunday.
(the tag line on the web site above says: restaurant in Gothenburg. For you who like good beer - thirty taps, a couple of hundred bottles and a kitchen that wants a little more)

So when we did our first OSD I came across a Norwegian food blogger--Anders Husa--who covers the greater Scandinavian dining scene. Some of our best meals on our trip were direct recommendations from him when I messaged him where we were going and what options we were considering. Well, fast forward to 2022, he is living in Copenhagen now with his American girlfriend who is also a food blogger, and they really have their fingers on the pulse of what is happening in Northern Europe. They have started to put together free online city guides to their favorite places in Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, and...Gothenburg. Thought I would share the Gothenburg guide here, but for those of you ranging further afield check out their other guides as well. Yes, they love to cover high end (expensive), Michelin rated places, but they also make lots of recommendations on good cafes, bakeries, burgers, etc. Hope you find it helpful!

just got back from Gothenburg and wanted to add that Tacos & Tequila on Tredje Långgatan is a really fun spot—great vibe and tasty food. Curious if anyone's tried the new food court at Kville Saluhall lately? I heard it's grown a lot and thinking of checking it out next time.

The Saluhallen in Gothenburg was fantastic - lots of different restaurants and bites for anyone. It is a short 5-minute walk from the Radisson Blu Scandinavia (which during the winter time has excellent smoked salmon for breakfast, by the way) and we ate there daily - there was a lot to try! It definitely gets busy around lunchtime but worth the visit and the waits aren't long especially for the to-go food. Hasselssons made maybe my favorite sandwich I've ever had. 14 m2 bao was great. Gelaterian had some of my favorite ice cream/gelato.

Haga had two of our favorites: Sjobaren and Hemma Hos. Toso was the restaurant we visited on Volvo's dime and it was some of the better Japanese I've had outside of NYC/Japan. Pralinboden has excellent (if pricey) chocolates. El Guiri had tasty tapas and drinks.

Gothenburg has a pretty bangin' under-the-radar food scene IMO. Tough to go wrong. We have done two OSDs and are planning to make a stop during Thanksgiving so we've definitely enjoyed the city especially in the fall/winter time!
