Hi,

Bought a 2018 S90 Momentum Plus FWD from a dealer under CPO in March 2021. Base manufacturer 4-yr warranty expires in Dec 2021.

Had declined extended warranty with the dealer since I wanted to do more research on whether I would need one given my usage and plan to retain the car long term.

Had a few questions around CPO and extended warranty:

1. Does the 5th year CPO warranty start after the manufacturer base warranty ends. Does that mean my CPO warranty should be available through Dec 2022.

2. How does the CPO and platinum volvo branded warranty compare with the base manufacturer warranty.

3. Should I get an extended warranty? If yes, do I need to get one before the base warranty expires or before the CPO warranty expires? Or can I get one anytime in the future?

4. Have read about the Steingold plans on this forum. Basic question i had was is this accepted by any dealer across the US ?

Appreciate any help in trying to figure this out.
Thanks in advance.

5 year CPO is from date it was first sold, and if you get a CPO "Wrap" to extend it to 10 years you have to do that at time of purchase, can't add later, like a regular extended warranty. But you can cancel it any time and get a refund, 100% before it starts, and prorated after. Plus you can get 10 year, 100K miles, $100 deduct. or spend even more and get 10 year, unlim miles, 0 deduct (I think).
Personally, unless I knew I wouldn't keep it long term, I wouldn't buy anything but a CPO with wrap, then if I did trade it in early I could get a refund on that.
My 2019 S90 in-service was 12/23/2019, so CPO ends 12/23/2024, and then the wrap ends 12/23/2029. (I chose the 100K/$100 deduct)

You can buy a VIP warranty anytime during the factory warranty. I imagine you're planning to keep the S90 for a while, so I highly recommend the VIP warranty based on my own experience with our 2017 XC90. We've had over $20k in services done under the VIP warranty.

Look up Volvo VIP warranties. Gold is a bit more limited and considered inclusionary (it lists what is covered), platinum is more extensive and is considered exclusionary (it lists what isn't covered). I'd go with platinum.

Steingold warranties are Volvo warranties and valid at any US dealer. I think you just can't purchase it thru Steingold if you're a California resident.

They really are a great value if you are going to own it a long time with lots of miles. Platinum is the only way to go. The others are rather limiting and only save a few bucks. Platinum is similar to the new car warranty but things like the trim and batteries fall off. All the things you would want to be covered are, it's a very short exclusionary list.

Agree! I bought my V90 new and intend to keep for a number of years. Luckily, at the time of delivery to the dealer, Volvo and Costco rebates totalled $3000.Decided to use this for VIP Platinum zero deductible, 100k miles. Between the factory warranty and VIP, coverage is 10 years/100k miles, which corresponds with my driving habits.

The dealer refunded my payments and money spent on window tint and the clear bra on my former 2020. I used that money and bought Steingold's 10 year/150k mile warranty for my replacement 2021. The 150k mile option wasn't available at the original dealer. With how much I drive, I think I'll make it close to that mileage in 10 years. I plan to keep it as long as possible.

Good. When I shopped the VIP, I recall the miles only went up to 100k. I asked Steingold for a price, but my dealer matched it, so I went with them. Overall, I drive about 15k miles a year, but do this, combined, with the two cars that I own. My V is my go-to for longer trips. I'll probably put around 9k miles per year on it.

I’m still deciding if I want to buy a warranty for my 2018 that. I just bought used (No CPO). I only drive 3k miles a year, but thinking about all that might go wrong worries me. At the same time, what are the chances of needing to spend over $3k in repairs over a few years that would have been covered by the platinum warranty? I don’t know…

From the posts in this forum, aged SPA car could get some issues like, supercharger gasket, A/C condenser, coolant hose. It is not very big thing but still each could cost $1k or more. And T5 is less costly for repair. So it is up to you.

Not sure if you actually priced VIP or any other products yet. Your car's age and how much coverage you may want will dictate the potential extended warranty cost. When I bought my car, new, to extend the warranty from 4 yrs/50k factory to 10 ulyrs/100k miles, zero deductible Platinum cost me $3100. From what I understand about this, considering your car's age, if you were to consider coverage like mine, my guess it would cost more than what I paid.

Go to Steingold and check out the cost for VIP for your car, with the plan you may want.

Thank you for your response everyone. Looking for clarification whether extended warranty can be purchased at any point in time or does it have to be within the base manufacturer warranty.

When I was buying my car I was able to stick firm to not falling for dealer traps and didnt want to pay a penny over the negotiated price of the car.

The dealer salesrep wasted 2 hours of my time trying to sell me on extended warranty and finally came down to 1900 after starting at 3800 for 6 yrs extended under VIP (didnt want third party). I am fairly sure it was for the platinum plan. So I am not sure how much margins do they have if they can halve the original price.

They went to the extent of saying that the sensus screen could die once I drive out of the showroom and I was quite shocked someone would say this given that I was buying a CPO with few years of coverage still left.

Hearing those arguments and sales pitch I was not sold that I really needed something that would provide true coverage and am still contemplating whether it makes sense to get one.

I guess it's possible, but from my experience, unlikely that a dealer would have offered Platinum VIP 10 years/100k miles, zero deductible for $1900, unless they were getting it back on the sales price of the car. With this said, there's no doubt extended car warranties have a high profit margin so, again, anything is possible.

I would buy any U.S warranties in a heartbeat. You guys have no idea how good you have it.

Here in Canada, the largest and most comprehensive warranty we have is a 4 year/240,000km (150k mi) warranty (whichever comes first) that is roughly equivalent to between Silver and Gold coverage, for a couple hundred dollars north of $6000 CAD (~$5000 USD).
Obviously, it can only be purchased when within the original factory warranty, and doesn't cover much.
AFAIK, it's impossible to buy a U.S warranty on a Canadian car (unless someone knows otherwise and can point me in the right direction). Pretty nervous about owning the car outside of that time period, and I'm seriously debating whether or not its value is at all any good.

I put a lot of miles on my vehicles. I average 30,000 + a year. I was offered the 10 year unlimited mile extended CPO warranty on my 2020 S90 and jumped on it. This was one of my main reasons to select the Volvo when I was looking for a new vehicle.

Well I had gone in determined to not spend anything above the negotiated cost of the car 🙂.
From what I can tell from your original/first post, my impression is that you declined the extended warranty offer because you were uncertain of its potential value or need, in your circumstance, which is very understandable. "Had declined extended warranty with the dealer since I wanted to do more research on whether I would need one given my usage and plan to retain the car long term." I didn't get the impression that you were "determined to not spend anything above the negotiated cost of the car".

This "extended warranty" topic has been discussed in many threads and posts in this forum. Overall, from my perspective, there are primarily two camps of thought; those that question its value and those that find value in this product. Both sides can/do offer their perspective and compelling arguments. All of this is valid. IMO, it comes down to what you are most comfortable in doing.

One of the best benefits of this forum, IMO, is that it gives the participants, whether they be fellow owners or those considering a Volvo, the opportunity to gain insight and knowledge about a particular Volvo-related topic. For those who may wish to consider the purchase of an extended warranty, having sufficient knowledge before finalizing the purchase agreement may be the best time to leverage this contract's cost. Also, after purchase, as the vehicle ages, the purchase of an extended warranty contract can become much more expensive.

One last comment. If you are considering the purchase of an extended warranty, in addition to VIP, there are other plans in the marketplace. Suggest searching this forum for this info. and drawing your own conclusions. In the past I recall members mentioning other companies that offered warranties at a lower cost, and some posts compared their plans to VIP. Good luck.
