Had the recall completed. To me, it seems as thought the front end is not as solid as before. Small things like steering wheel "feedback" when going over freeway raised lines or taking a corner at a fairly high speed and hearing tire noise from the fronts. Sure, car still handles great but not exactly as before... Had it in dealer today (3750 oil change) and they indicated that everything was solid. But still, to me, there is a noticeable difference since the tie-rod change. Anyone else notice this or am I imagining things???

Re: Recall-Tie Rod Assembly-Car not Handling the Same as Before??? (ggleavitt)

I have not noticed any handling changes since having the recall work done last month.

Take it back and ask them to realign the front end, or at least set the toe-in.
Tom.

I assumed that when they did the recall, all they did was check for out of tolerance/limits on the tie rods, and if they were within spec, then no parts were replaced, and hence, nothing done to the vehicle? So are they swapping out the tie rods regardless?

Yes, they are swapping out the tie rod assemblies as part of the recall, regardless of condition upon inspection. Not sure what they looked like before but now they are a grey metallic color. As for the other post replies, I will keep an eye out for any unusual tire wear or any other anomalies. Perhaps it's just a "mental" thing but it seems as though the suspension does not feel as solid as before the replacement. Thanks to all who replied...

But you mentioned more tire noise - that's not mental, and directly influenced by toe-in (or lack thereof). It will also change steering feel, and turn-in crispness.
Toe is definitely changed by tie rod end swaps, should have been recorrected afterwards. If you wait for tire wear, it will cost you. Take it in now...
Tom.

I had my steering rack replaced several months back and immediately noticed a difference in the way it handles. Seems more squirrelly and less predictable. I thought maybe it was my tires as I had them rotated the same visit. I don’t know if they did the tie rods, but they did say the rack was a new design. I’ll have to ask them about this next oil change.

The rack connects directly to the tie rods, then to the ball joints, then to the steering knuckles. If they changed the rack, they changed the toe and it needs alignment.
Squirrelly as in won't keep the direction you point it? Toe. Or caster, but since you had the rack done, toe.
Tom.

We had the recall work done and there was no appreciable change in steering characteristics. I'd call the dealer and get them to fix whatever they did.

Most noticeable on the interstate. I find I'm working harder to keep it straight in my lane and at times, it's a bit unnerving when surrounded by 18 wheelers. I hope it is as simple as making a few adjustments. I’ll let you know.

I've experienced the same problems after the steering rack was replaced at 22,500 miles. I agree the car doesn't handle as crisply as before. The car went in for its 30,000 service today and the service manager is trying to fix the situation. I hope we have a solution soon.

Scott,
Google Volvo or ford recalls. I dont recall which, so try both. Have your VIN handy and it will bring up ALL recalls for your car

We need another GTG in the winter involving a track

Re: Recall-Tie Rod Assembly-Car not Handling the Same as Before??? (myxc90)

Had the tie rods done on our 06 V8 but not yet on our 04 2.5T.
I'm getting a thunking now from the center of the vehicle when I hit a bump? Kind of like what I've experienced before with worn bushings but there is no unusual feedback in the steering. Very strange
Have only driven a few miles from the dealership to home so will have to see if it happens again tomorrow. Gives me an excuse to drive it. The V8 transforms the vehicle - a great engine.
As an aside...
The oil change I had done at the same time was $115 and then they charged me $35 to remove a rock from behind a heat shield.
This is for plain old mineral oil - seems a little pricey no? The $35 thing just made me shake my head.
