Re: Steering Tie Rod Recall (nomarkup)
This is probably the cause of some of the premature tire wear and alignment problems. Not all of them, but some.
Good to see it is being taken care of.

Our XC90 had its 22,500 service today and I brought in a printout of the recall. The S/A said Volvo had not shipped the parts yet. I'll be curious to learn when the repairs start and if they have any effect on the various front end clunks and groans that plague these cars.

Re: (nomarkup)

I called Volvo customer service line yesterday about the recall
(strangely I wanted to make sure I don't have a steering failure
in my daily driver).
After taking my name, address and vin (a few times) the customer
service agent could give me no information except to tell me that
I might get a letter in 30 days, that the recall might be in phases,
and that she had been given no information about the models or
vins that would be affected.
All I heard on the radio is that MY 2003-2006 are involved, but no
insight into which specific models or vin ranges. Don't know if it more
likely the 5 cylinder, the t6, or if the V8 is involved, or all of the above.
Needless to say I was less than happy about this. What is the
point of announcing a steering-related recall and then not
providing your customer service people any information? And
when this story hit the radio, the Volvo customer service number
was given out.
Not a happy camper. What happened to that Volvo for Life crapola?
Maybe it should be changed to "Volvo - We'll get around to fixing your
steering when we have a chance".

Hey - at least if the ball joints go while you're doing 70 on the freeway, you've got plenty of air-bags and boron steel to cushion the blow

I have an appt. Monday to get the recall done. My rep ran my VIN and said my '06 V8 was included in the recall. I'm also having the Tech Bulletin on the steering rack pretensioner done as well. I'll let you guys know if any of these noises go away.

Am I the only one who finds it interesting that when news like this
comes out, like a major safety-related recall, none of the Volvo sales people, who are otherwise so talkative on this site, have a peep to
add?

I'm coming up on my 7500-mile service and looking for any updates/recalls that I could give my dealer for them to fix.
Entering my VIN in this site turns up nothing. Hopefully my dealer knows about this recall for I will definitely inform them.

I wish Volvo would better inform their dealers of these issues, or any issues at all. Just tried asking the dealer about this recall and they haven't heard of it, which is pretty upsetting.

Re: (safetyfirst)

I brought my XC90 in today to the dealership (Volvo of Lisle) to get my rear wheel bearings replaced to eliminate the load roar that has slowly developed. They also took care of the tie rod ends recall work as well. The service receipt simply says "Recall 157 -- Replace both tie rod ends and align front end per SMB 64-157, 05-31-06 and TNN 64-157, 05-31-06." Parts used were PK157 Tie Rod Ends, 30760807-5 Ball Joint Kit, and 30760806-7 Ball Joint Kit. The service manager said that it would be a 3 hr job.

Am I the only one who finds it interesting that when news like this
comes out, like a major safety-related recall, none of the Volvo sales people, who are otherwise so talkative on this site, have a peep to
add?

A professional, in any field, tries to get all the facts before making statements or comments about a particular subject outside their area of expertise. Why come on a forum and contirbute to the trail of misinformation that can sometimes be created?
As I understand this recall...it is more a precautionary measure than a reaction to any actual failures or accidents that were caused. It is an inner ball joint that "could" have a stresspoint weakened. We have seen 1 in 3 years that was possibly a candidate for the recall! That's 1 in about 500+!
Are there some uninformed dealers out there? Sure there are! Are there some "off the wall...rip off" consultants out there? Sure there are! I don't lump all consultants together....so do me a personal favor...don't lump all Volvo salespeople together. Fact is...the one's who are clueless about the recall...don't even know what Swedespeed is!
I will speak for myself and Max......we try to keep a perspective on things. I would NEVER EVER let a customer drive an unsafe vehicle PERIOD!!!!! This reacll is to "make sure" that ther eis no unusual wear and tear on a ball joint that has yet to fail! Pretty responsible on Volvo's part I would say...."don't wait for it to possibly fail...let's go ahead and do the right thing and fix/replace any that show usual symptoms now"......After all...isn't that what you want from an automaker? Proactive action rather than reactive excuses?
