has anyone tried to lay the rear seats flat with the rear center cooler option?
there seems to be a bracket in the right rear seat back that keeps the seat
from folding completely flat. i'm not so sure about removing the bracket
because it will limit my ability to replace the center seat if i ever need to. i am
wondering if volvo created an option that is not fully functional??? or is there
a "proper" way to deal with the situation. if i can't fold the passenger seats
down, i can't stow my longboard... the idea of having the cooler was to keep
stuff in it (aka water) when i go on road trips (aka surfing)... also, has anyone
noticed that the cig lighter plugs are a bit short?? everytime i plug something
in, it pops out with the slightest touch. are there modifications available to fix
this or am i just SOL???
You're doing something VERY wrong, ALL these seats fold FLAT.
Are you LOWERING the rear headrests and pulling the seat bottoms FORWARD first?
Try reading your owners manual on how to lower the seats

Yes.
I would suggest you contact your Volvo dealer
I remember it well. I was thinking about getting one for my 01 XC at the time but decided I would hardly use it

The center cooler option is designed for XC70 wagons with the 40/20/40 rear seat. You need to remove the center section of the rear seat. There is a release handle on the back side of the seat back. To remove the center seat cushion, flip the seat bottom up and then release the bright red clips.
Here is a picture of the center cooler option:

William

Re: rear center cooler option on the XC70 (William)

yes, thank you, i already have it installed. that's not the problem... my issue is with folding down the back of the seat to the right side of the center cooler when installed (the seat behind behind the passenger seat next to the cooler). the left side (behind the driver) flattens out just fine, the right side gets hung up on the little bracket attached to the inner side of the seat back... it looks like a little metal "U" bolted into the side of the seat, and it hits the top of the cooler box when the seat is folded forward.

Re: rear center cooler option on the XC70 (T5_awd)

I have a 2002 XC with configuration of 40 20 40 rear passenger seats like yours. Looking from the front seats towards the rear there is a metal loop on the center armrest side of the left passenger seat back. It interfaces with the center armrest back to give it stability in upright position. I feel that if you need to have the benefits of all the rear seats down to carry cargo you may have to temorarily remove the cooler so that you may completely lower the rear seat backs. I do not see the practicality of removing this metal loop so that the passenger seatback may fully be lowered. If you only need half of the rear lowered, why not lower the seat behind the driver only. For those times you need the whole of the back flat, remove the cooler and lower all the seats.

Re: rear center cooler option on the XC70 (pauldunlop22)

ya, unfortunately that is my only option... i would have thought that volvo would have designed their "volvo" accessories to be fully adapted to work in their "volvo" cars. perhaps i can find a custom shop out here in LA to modify the lid of the cooler (notch it) or something... or get chip foose to overhaul my ride
