RE: Etm extended warranty, my story of dissapointment. a little long... but hey you can skim it!!

I recieved my letter in the mail about the extended warranty on the etm and the updated software to be installed after march 1st. i proceeded to set up a appointment for march 14. this work out well because my check engine light along with the conditions for the warranty work came along two days after getting the letter. march 14 comes along and my appointment is set up as a waiter ( i was a service advisor up until 4 months ago, waiting is a good thing.).
long story short i was there for 3 hours and was told the reprogram was not necessary and they cleaned the throttle body and replaced several tie wraps and a couple of gaskets. before the work was performed i told the service advisor to have the tech pull all codes before and after so i can be assured what was related and what codes were present. i was adamant that the letter provide stated a software update was required. no one really new about the extended warranty or anything about a software update.
i leave the dealership and do a simple test. i turned off the traction control and tried to spin the tires from a stop. before this issue my car could do that all day, my car failed this test and felt like it had 70% of the power it should have. i proceeded to go to work and within 14 miles the check engine light was back on. the only diff. was the car was running smoothly and not bucking and stalling out as before.
i called the dealership and they set up another appointment for the next day. this time i was there for two hours and was informed that my car has a new code tripped and it requires a new mass air flow meter or sensor. they said they would cut me a break and it will only be $360.00 installed.
at this point i calmly said i don't think it is the maf, and said this is one of the most advanced pcms in the market place i am sure it can record more than just one code at a time! i declined the maf sensor and re-stated the need for the software update. at this point i was informed a diag charge of $92.00 would be imposed for the discovery of my problem.
this is where it got interesting. i explained that i had them pull the codes before hand to eliminate other factors. i followed the instructions on the letter from appointment to possibly having other issues not related. to have the check engine light come on within 14 miles and 45 minutes from leaving their shop i think it was related.
i declined paying the diag (did not authorize it and timing was too close when it came on.) service manager did take care of that. i proceeded to call the numbers on the letter that volvo sent. long story short the software update or upgrade is not available, because it is not ready yet. the person that i spoke to informed me they are hoping to have it ready in the next two weeks but not to hold my breath.
so everyone that has taken there vehicles in for service be aware that as of march 15, 2006 the software update is not ready and not available to you. if you thought you had something done, double check what was done.
in all fairness to the dealership they did change my oil on the first day. i account a 1/2 hour of my wait to that. i was treated somewhat fairly, but did not get what i came in for. i will wait for the update before doing anything with the maf sensor.

MAF sensor is easy to change DIY or by an independent shop. JRL gave a great tip about Keystone Motors in PA, who sell Volvo parts at very competetive prices. (See general FWD forum). I just bought a turbo solenoid and a headlight, and those together and shipped to cali were cheaper than a headlight alone normally.

Software has been delayed for at least another week
BTW, I was also told that they are cleaning them (ETMs) first ALONG with the new software and this will eliminate most problems. Your dealer jumped the gun and cleaned without any software TO install

Are we sure the new ETM software to be released is only for non-turbo '02 S60's and won't apply to turbos? (according to the other thread)

The reason is because the 02 turbo cars got a new throttle design the non turbo still used the previous version so thats why they get updated and not the turbo cars. You can tell by looking at your throttle. If it is rectangle shaped and has a yellow or white sticker on it, it is the one that needs updated. If it is kinda round looking and has the connector for the wiring harness attached to it, it is the new throttle and does not need updated.
It also does not have a sticker on it at all. Hope this is helpful. I will try to take some pics tomorrow at work and post them up to help.

Just wanted to check that because I didn't want some technician upgrading my ETM software when my '02 T5 doesn't need it. Could have done some bad things.
So it doesn't include all '02 S60s; hope this helps, JRL.

You should file a complaint with NHTSA re: your experience. Also, you may want to write a letter to Volvo NA. Don Wilson has all of the contact addresses on his web site, http://www.vexedvolvo.org

Was referring to phaton5.9 who started this thread.
He is not "veddy veddy happy". He had a very unfortunate experience veddy much like mine.
If you had an ETM failure, file a complaint.
If you are having issues with the new software, follow-up on the complaint and let them know.
If you are having a problem with a dealer who refuses to administer the new ETM warranty or 155 upgrade, contact the proper Consumer Protection Agency in your state. (Your state's Secretary of State, Attorney State General's office, or the Federal Trade Commission as appropriate).
That's the way it gets done properly and we all benefit.

+1 on keystone motors, they are about 10 minutes from me. I had my sunroof explode this winter and they were very fair on price and got the car in the same day and gave me a loaner (even though they couldnt do the work for a week) because a snow storm was coming. I didnt buy the car there but that is where I will be purchasing my next one from them that is for sure.
