Re: rattling noise over bumps = non-original brake pads??? (lando_pr)

Quote, originally posted by lando_pr »
Hello, I'm having this problem with my car and was told it will rattle as long as non-OEM pads are installed. So, I need original rear brake pads. Anyone with an experience with this? There's someone with a C70 with the same problem here:

Any help will be appreciated.

Will these work??

It has nothing to do with them being aftermarket pads, they were installed incorrectly. They backing on the pads have a 3 part wire trap that need to hold the pads in place. Check out

for my brake write up that describes this exact issue and how to resolve it!

The thing is I don't have the clips to put them back on. Where can I find those?

No the clips are on the backing plates of the rear brake pad. They are designed to slide down onto the caliper piston. In the write up I explain that the first set I installed I bent the clips and then cut them off, which caused the rattle.

I recently bought a new set of pads and installed them correctly, and there are no more rattles coming from the rear calipers.

You will need new pads if the retention clips are missing but using non-OEM pads is not causing the issues, the bad install caused the rattles.

Here is a picture that shows the piston with the brake pad installed properly

And this is with the bad install. Notice that the pads are not attached to the piston like they are in the first picture? This is the reason they are rattling. They need the spring clip from the fist picture to "lock" on to the piston.

HERO!!!!! I just bought my '07 a week ago and can't stand the stupid rattling noise anymore! I think I need some new pads though because the "stealership" I bought it from said they just replaced the pads a week prior and everything "should be good"

yeah dollars to doughnuts they were installed improperly. I did it wrong the first time and had a horrible rattle going over small bumps. The rattle went away when i stepped on the brakes or pulled up on the E-brake. The second time around i did the job right, have over 300 miles on the pads with not one rattle.

Re: (lando_pr)

Quite welcome. Trust me the rattling was driving me nuts, I have about 1/2 mile of rough roads right by my place. Some days when I was on the phone I would need to pull the e-brake just to quite the rear end of the car down so I could finish my conversation.

the verdict is------ gotta go to the dealer. the pads were installed correctly and everything seemed kosher, so I have to go to the dealer for a recall anyway, might as well have them fix the rattle

Ughh sorry to hear that, from the description I would have bet it was that the clips were not attached to the piston. Good luck!
