When I shut off the car, there is a nasty rattle under the engine bay or slightly behind a moment after the motor is silent. If I shut the car down with the clutch depressed, this does not happen. Now I'm sure most of you know I have always HATED the clutch in my R with a passion. It seems like I have to press it really far to disengage, but to re-engage, I have to release it really far. This inconsistancy has always bothered me, and I have smoked hell out of my clutch more than once because of it... something I NEVER did in any other standard (except the S4 2.7 the very first time I drove it, but only once). If there IS something loose (which I am certain is the case), I know it is responsible for a LOT of clutch wear, because I baby my clutch under normal driving (if I downshift I rev-match, I delay engagement on upshifts to rev-match... etc.). So WHEN they find out there is something wrong with the clutch cable/hydro (not sure which), if my clutch is nearly dead, are they going to replace it under warranty, or not? I'll be so mad if they don't (which is what I KNOW JRL's and the manual's answer is) because I would normally be able to run a clutch for at least 85K, and I'm only at 40K. So the questions are:
1) Would/could this rattle and these symtoms affect the funtion of my clutch?
2) If so, might I get a new clutch on the house? (< I think I'm dreaming again on this one )

They may or may not (pay for a clutch) but your rattle is the dual mass flywheel and is nothing to worry about.
I have it too, from day one.
It's an annoying "death rattle" but it's not hurting anything.
I found out about this with my last 911. It made an awful noise on shut off, same noise as the Volvo

It was only recently that I figured out that depressing the clutch when powering down eliminates the rattle. So, the flywheel, huh? I just really want to believe that there is something wrong, and it will be fixxed, I will drive away from the dealer on Wed with a clutch that I can actually appreciate! If not, that will probably be my next mod... Something a little tougher, but still comfortable as a daily driver. Not sure what to do yet though, and I don't think I'll have Volvo do the work. Any successful clutch upgrades in here?
