Tonight, for only the second time since owning the R, I experienced the dreaded rain squeal. What had me really worried was that the first time was only a few weeks ago. Anyway, it was a downpour and I really couldn't pull off with the traffic, so I drove with it occurring on and off for roughly 7miles. As soon as I got home, I jacked it up and took these pictures. Honestly, for how bad it sounded whilst driving I expected it to look one hell of a lot worse. But when I got out of the car I noticed a very prominent metal-on-metal smell.

And before you ask, yes the bracket is gone, and I haven't heavily modded the car, so I'm not sure why all of a sudden this is happening?
The car is still under an extended warranty, once I get to work tomorrow looks like I'll have to call on it and see if it's covered. If not, JRL mod or exhaust will come sooner than expected.

All the dealer will do is put on a funky bracket.
I would forget the dealer and head straight to your favorite exhaust shop and remove that f'n resonator!

No resonator for life!!! Atacama, they must have put a droan enhancer on your car or maybe Atacama leather resonates sound more than other leather thus giving Nordkap the #1 position.

Removing the resonator (JRL mod) will not add more resonance. The masses will soon respond in support.
The bracket is total foo foo. The resonator delete is the solution. Unless you want a new exhaust system, which is also a great idea.

Re: Rain Squeal... (850arrrsaylikepirate)

I have seen the bracket put on other cars, and unless it pulls the exhaust AWAY from the drive shaft, it wont do diddly. I was saving up for a proper exhaust, but i guess I'll find a reputable exhaust shop that will do it for cheap it won't kill the plans.
Anyone know of one in the Scranton area?

Re: (dennyf)

I had the Volvo alternative bracket (with the orange things) installed and the squeal never happened since.
Henry

I would agree that when the resonator is removed that a few things happen:
1. The exhaust is louder, especially in a V70R.
2. The exhaust note has a resonance that *can* be annoying at certain freeway speeds.
3. Throttle off sound from the exhaust is certainly different, certainly louder as well.
Personally, I like the way it sounds, especially with my Phuz DP, but some people won't like it. My better half made me dynamat my R's rear to deal with the change...

Remove the resonator and thats it you won't crack open the shaft and you won't have to worry about bottoming out. And the sound isn't even that bad or loudly annoying! anyway good luck with whatever choice you make

Re: (crimnlmnded)

In my JRL-modded S60R, the engine/exhaust is still essentially inaudible when cruising at highway speeds (wind and tire noise is all you'll hear above 55MPH). If you get on it to pass or go up a hill, it is a little louder but sounds great IMHO.

I CANNOT believe you still have the resonator on that bad black R

I still have my resonator on, just to spite you
...oh, that, and I have yet to hear rain squeal.
...oh, and that with the mostly highway driving I do with the car, I could never stand the added, uh, resonance.
