I've had my '04 V70R for 2 years and 27,000 miles as of this month, but had my first experience with the rain squeal today driving from Portland to Seattle in heavy rain.
I knew what it was from the past posts here on Swedespeed (thanks everybody). I exited the freeway to peer under the car in the pouring rain to ensure there wasn't another obvious problem. The State Patrol pulled up behind me while I was looking under the car, asking if I had a problem, so I got to explain the known vehicle flaw to the trooper, then we both continued on our way.
In reading the archived posts, it seems the only fix offered by the dealer is to "adjust" the exhaust by hanging it lower. I don't think I need any lower ground clearance. Removing the resonator (on my own dime) has also been suggested on the board, which I suppose is fine as long as it doesn't cause a voided warranty.
Is the only real damage to the car the fact that the driveshaft will have been scored, and therefore susceptible to corrosion? How concerned do I really need to be?

Re: Rain Squeal- first experience today (kr900)

My first experience with the rain squeal was with a woman in the car. I was just saying to her that the car is very safe in the rain because of it's all wheel drive when all of the sudden it started screaching. It was embarassing. That wasn't the first or last time that this car embarassed me with odd noises and clunks.
I really really want to love this car.
Solutions? I removed my resonator. Warranty? I am hoping they don't notice. My driveshaft is still scored and it doesn't seem to be rusting.

Awesome welcome to the club. My dealer has tried everything short of removing the resonator to fix it and nothing has worked. I'm trying to setup a time to get it removed at an exhaust place.

The bracket has "finger" that go up around the top side of the exhaust pipe. These "fingers" keep the exhaust pipe from moving up too high and contacting the drive shaft.
The down side to this fix is if you snag your center resonator on something like many here have done, the "fingers" may help destroy your exhaust system.
I opted for removal of the center resonator over the dealer fix. It's simpler, quicker, and a bit of improvement in sound.

Re: Rain Squeal- first experience today (Our R)

Well, have to say that I finally got around to doing the JRL Mod (still choosing the charity) to get rid of the rain squeal. Had to bring my wife to the ER at 3:30 am last week because of her back, and the damn rain squeal acted up. Not what I wanted to hear at 3:30 in the am. That was the last straw.
The review?

Definitely a bit louder, but mostly on part throttle in lower gears (cruising around 30-50mph) and at WOT.
Sounds good outside the car, but not much louder inside the car. A bit louder on startup, idle is silent and highway cruising is silent.
Nice little indentation on my driveshaft. Also, whoever did the previous rain squeal fix screwed up and mis-mounted the bracket so that a BOLT was rubbing the driveshaft during the rain. So now I have 2 marks. They're rusting. Anything to be worried about? Should be fixed under warranty, I would hope.
Kept the resonator just in case I sell the car.
Also picked up a set of the newer wheel centers from Boston Volvo Village (thanks John!) and they look sharp. Car needs to be washed, so no pics.

Re: Rain Squeal- first experience today (Our R)

The revised TNN deleted the use of the bracket for "R" cars.
Bottom line is that Volvo really does not have a fix for the problem on R cars, other than continuing to bring it in each time it occurs. Of course you can have them lower the exhaust but it is already the lowest point. Pretty much on your own.

Re: Rain Squeal- first experience today (rogersampson)

Kevin,
Jack had this problem and it resulted in a slight scoring of the driveshaft.
I opted to remove the resonator before i had the problem. Yes, the car is a little noiser, but not bothersome in any way.
As for warranty issues, we have been assured that removal of the resonator won't affect coverage. I hope that is true.

Since the rain spray is coming from underneath, the underside of the resonator becomes cooler than the top side. The uneven cooling rate causes the exhaust to bend in an inverted smile shape. If the differential in cooling is great enough (i.e. the exhaust is as hot as it's going to get and there is a lot of water splashing up) it'll bend far enough to touch the exhaust.
Not fun.

Re: (needsdecaf)

Here's another explanation of the issue as well as Volvo's fix.....which initially was for the R but then wasn't:
http://www.v70xc.com/resources...e.pdf
I had the dealer put it on even though I didn't have the issue.

why doesn't this happen with other cars?
i mean...all exhaust systems get hot, and water eventually hits it, so why does our system "bend" so much?!
