I have a 2010 Volvo S80 V8 with the tech package. Last week I started to get messages that the Radar is blocked and see manual. The car is always clean. So knew that wasn't the problem.... I was able to take it to the Volvo dealer and they came back with that the radar is failing. It did pass the alignment test and a few others. But it fails on the Calibration. They quoted me about $1,500 for the parts and labor. Has any one else had this??...

First I've heard of a radar unit failing giving signs of "failing". Having experience in radar functions, IMHO either it works, or it doesn't. I'm impressed your retailer has the actual alignment tool. It's quite a contraption. It's a physical device that's needed to check the alignment. I take it car isn't CPO? The 2010 Safe and Secure CPO wrap package was an amazing 7yr/100k warranty. Nobody was buying a 60k Volvo during that fun economic time...

Did they give you the DTC's on the estimate?

I would remove the grille and really take a good look at the actual unit, which is about 6 inches behind the grille shield. Who knows, you may have a dead butterfly jammed in the edge of the unit. It doesn't take much to give you that pop up message. Hell, hard rain will trigger mine. Take a very close look at the radar unit for gunk before you fork out that cash. Replacing the unit is too easy for the retailer. I seriously doubt they pulled the grille to take a close look at the unit itself. VIDA calls for a physical inspection of the unit for debris, if it's aligned.

Does your adaptive cruise function?

Yes I was able to see the DTC.
The car did not come with a CPO warranty
I did remove the grille a clean behind the grille and the radar face its self.
The ACC does not see a car until the last second. Even if the time interval is set to five seconds. Once it finally detects a vehicle in front, I'll get the radar blocked see manual. Even with the cruise off and the distance alert/collision warning off. The message will still pop up with in 3-15 minutes of driving.

I've only had that message in hard rain conditions. It usually clears up in 10-15 minutes and I can reuse it.

So I bite the bullet late week for the repair. The service department had to order the part, since they didn't have it in stock. Anyway, once it came in a few days later. They were able to put it in and conduct the tests again. Annnnd everything passed with flying colors!!! Final bill was around 1350, they only charged for the part and the software.

$1350 USD? That's... well, a bit brutal really. Out of that how much was the radar unit itself? And what software did they need to bill you for? I can't help but think that it should've been possible to order a radar from a salvage yard or such, fit that yourself and let the dealer do any calibrations or similar that might be necessary.

Also, did they find out what was wrong with the old radar or did they just resort to swapping it straight away?

My car once had a radar malfunction. I simply removed it, remounted it, and ran the calibration sequence in VIDA. I haven't had an issue since. I'm not sure if this is of any help, but it just must have become slightly misaligned. There is a screw that the radar mounts with that allows the radar to adjust up and down. Perhaps that has something to do with it. I wasn't getting a radar blocked message though, I was getting some sort of malfunction message (I don't remember exactly what it said as it was a few years ago.)

Secondly, a used radar from another S80 or V70/XC70 should work just fine. There's no need to pay full price for a brand new one. These don't seem to fail all too often so a used one should be fine. I'd imagine you can get one from most any Volvo specialist junk yard. It's just important that the bracket and mounting tabs not be bent or broken. If your Volvo dealer isn't willing to install a used part. (I haven't had any issues with that in the past with the Volvo dealer I use.), simply mount the new/used radar and run the calibration sequence in VIDA. If you don't have VIDA, you could probably buy a used radar, a DICE, and VIDA for less than just the cost of the dealer replacing the radar with a new unit.

I know its been awhile.
I looked around for a used unit local and on the web. There were some, but they already had damage on those units.
I did try, the unplug and re-plug it in. Still didn't work.
So my only option was to get a new unit. Of course the dealer didn't carry the part since it's not a common part that fails.
It took a couple of days for it to arrive. They installed it and realigned it & calibrated it. The new unit passed with flying colors.
Total bill was around $1,500. I know its a a lot. But it is covered by Volvo's new warranty program, pay once and never again. Manage well frame the invoice so I never lose it...!!
Its been over a month since the replacement, and everything is working fine.
