No, not a race at all...just big kudos from the driver!
Last night as I was driving home from work, a hole in the traffic opened up on the Hutch just before it turned to the Merritt in Greenwich. For some reason, people seem to love the left lane and loathe the right lane on this stretch of highway. In lighter rush hour, cars (usually slower moving) will line up for what seems like a mile in the left lane and leave the right lane almost completely empty. It's a 2 lane pkwy so no middle lane. Anyway, when I had an opening to safely get around some of the slower movers, I did. The guy in the Mustang GT behind me apparently had the same idea....but I wasn't waiting around.
I had to pull into the parkway Mobil in Greenwich since I had little to no gas left and a second later, in came the Mustang. As we were both filling up, the driver walked over to me with a huge smile on his face saying, "Now, that's impressive, you just took off like a burst...I had no idea...is that an automatic?" We chatted for a minute or so. He was really surprised and impressed with the Volvo, especially how he though it bolted away from him when I hit the gas at speed. Really nice guy...gave a big smile and waive when he exited the parkway in Stamford.
Now, this wasn't a race and I know the GT has cojones enough to give the R a real race if he wanted to push it, but it was still nice to to get the 'thumbs up' from another car guy about the R.
-Eric

those are the kind of people that are cool to run into!
its the ricers that try to race you all the time that are a real PITA.
I remember some time back, when I had the T5, I was going down the highway early in the morning and I came upon an old school Porsche (model ??) and the guy started to speed up as I got close to him so we went for a friendly sprint and the volvo pulled away but as i slowed down to +5mph, I got two thumbs up as he drove by.

Whenever I take my "R" the Gas station or the track I get positive feedback: Volvo finally made a good looking car, that car is fast what's in that thing, and it handles prettry good lastly, that's an automatic!!!. Now if I can just remember how to reduce the traction control.

Same thing as the 912 (basically a 4 cyl 911), the 924 was a poor man's or entry level 944.
-Eric

Re: R vs. (cloaked)

With all due respect to the Mustang, it was never a poor man's 944 - especially an '80s Mustang. It's like calling the 'Vette a poor man's 911. One aspiring to own either rarely aspires to own the other one since their qualities appeal to such different wants and people.
The C6 is a great car but it would never replace a 911 in my garage and that statement has nothing to do with how quickly the C6 accelerates or performs in the slalom.
-Eric

BTW you're right no one should ever call the Corvette especially the Z06 a poor man's Porsche.

Re: R vs. (Sue Esponte)

Eric, your story gives me hope... not only did you see a Mustang, but it was a V8 model and was driven by a car enthusiast. Amazing! I must encounter 5 per hour, all V6s decked out with hardcore racing stripes driven by someone who doesn't know their car is available in V8 or manual
I have seen a few tastefully modded Mustang GTs, and when done right those things look amazing. They have a very clean and pure shape. The stock exhaust also sounds pretty decent. I'm still waiting to see a GT500 though...
And the Merrit/Hutch is insane. I drove on it the first time last week during rush hour. I think people are scared of the abrupt exit/entrances that have no on or off-ramps, so that's why they like to pile into the left lane. I also saw a Titanium R and gave a thumbs up, the woman driving didn't notice!
I'm guessing that wasn't you
And Corvettes and Porsches are like Coke and Pepsi. Love both and I'll take one of each please

The first one was actually pretty neat with a real overhead cam Porsche four cylinder (available from the 356 Carrera 2000 model). After writing this and searching some of the Porsche FAQs, I realize that must have been a rather unique car. I now suspect someone might have done an engine swap from an earlier 356 Carrera.
Does anyone know if Porsche ever put the 4-cam 4 cylinder engines in the 912/911 body from the factory? I now wonder if the car I drove was assembled by some aftermarket tuner? If it was, whoever did it was a genius. It sure looked factory enough...

(sorry about the thread hijack)
