I see 20-30 somethings in Esclades, BMW's of all Sizes, G35's ( at least 7 a day) and Big SUV's wearing the Holly Wood shades that cover thiere face. I see a few( 1-3) volvos a day moslty S60's but never R's or the V70 XC. And when i see the S60 owners its mostly older white couples.
The younger crowd here is into the SUV craze or the BMW 745 with 26 inch rims. So when i first noticed the R i didnt know what it was and i was quite interested in it. I saw my first one today on the hiway.
Myself i am not rich, im educated but dont make 80k a year so i guess when i purchase mine i will be perseived as one of them but in fact im just a military guy who actually got his R at a good deal when i normally wouldnt be able to get it. But where i live status is everything. These people go greats lengths to get the 500k house and 60k car on a 45k salary, but wont pay the extra 45 bucks to get the road hazard warranty on a set of brand new 600 dollar tires ( i saw this and was amazed).
Nor Cal is full of posers!!
Evan

I will aruge the fact that you have to be "rich" to drive an R. I am nowhere near rich. I am middle class american UPS driver. Even is you are sub-middle you can afford nicer things, if you know how to handle money.

All of this class talk is garbage. Outside of the über-rich, most "upper class" fight to call themselves middle class or "upper middle-class" anyway. Its all a bunch of malarky.
In some areas, how much someone spends on a home today has more to do with necessity than wealth. In Fairfield/Westchester county $500K will get you a small, 50+ yr old home on a tiny lot that is in serious need of expensive updating. Moving into a $1M home doesn't make you rich, it makes you..."comfortable".
I can't drive anywhere without being surrounded by Volvos. It is, literally, Volvo country. Some people buy them new and others buy them used. Some owners can't afford their lease/finance payments and others park them in garages shared with Ferraris bought with cash. And then there's everyone in between. You know the whole addage about not judging a book by its cover, right? It applies to Volvo owners, too.
If I recall correctly, market research says that the typical new Volvo owner has a household income of something like $180K. That's only a median. It means there are owners who make $25K and owners who make $1M+. In my book, $180K is enough salary that the 'average' owner shouldn't be crying poverty. But, does it make you rich? In East Bumblephuck, it may make you a Donald Trump. Around here? Not so much. It's a reality of where you live, but around here $180K doesn't put a Ferrari in your garage when you've just bought a 2000 sq.ft., 3 bedroom, 2 bath starter home for $1M+, you've got a crazy mortgage, 2.5 kids, day care, college savings and endless other things to think of first.
-Eric

I think basically what everone is saying is that there are a lot of variables that need to be taken into account before we classify and stereotype who drives a Volvo. Let's just leave it at that.

I like to think of the demographic that buys Volvos as: Those People Who Probably Don't Own a BMW
I think that says about everything there is to say....

Re: R sighting is good, but never a response from sightee. (stevectsai)

Sorry to interject guys, but:
Is this thread about the lack of response to sighting posts, or is it about the demographics of Volvo owners?
If the former, the thread can stay here so long as it gets back on track. If it's the latter, then I'll be moving this to the Off Topic Forum. If it's both, then the thread will get moved to a more appropriate forum.
Let me know
Thanks to everyone for your participation!

Re: R sighting is good, but never a response from sightee. (R Salesman)

Lee,
It's clearly a discussion about sightings and why we think people don't respond. The demographic of Volvo and R owners has EVERYTHING to do with why there are so few, if any, responses. The fact is, a vast majority of Volvo owners may surf the web, but most aren't Volvo car nuts.
I know moderating isn't always easy but does every thread have to be so tunnel visioned that every response needs to incorporate a specific reference to an R for the thread to truly be "R" appropriate?
-Eric
