I've been reading with great interest the many conversations on here regarding VIP warranties, getting "maximum enjoyment" out of a car by "having" to purchase it with low mileage, CPO, etc. Others I've noticed have simply been temporary Volvo owners, venturing or ready to venture on to Audis, BMWs, etc. I've been in Volvos for over 15 years, most were purchased used and I have put well over 100,000 miles on the 8 that I have owned (one of which was a 2001 S60) with the exception of one which saved my life in a crash, and never had a major problem or failure with any of them. One of my current bricks is 15 years old with 200,000 miles. It still runs like new, although admittedly it has required an investment on my part over time to keep it that way. I think there are some diehard Volvo fans on here who keep and maintain their cars for a lifetime, and if an R is well maintained by the owner, one should be able to drive it far longer than the average vehicle on the road (around 15-20 years). We all are aware of the vehicle's weaknesses, IE angle gear, wheel bearings, etc. While it definately isn't as robust as a 240, once most of these issues are rectified, the R should make for an outstanding vehicle for years to come. So I ask the following:<p>1) Are many R drivers on here newbie Volvo owners, who would be afraid to own an R or other Volvo past warranty?<p>2) How long do many of you intend on keeping your R, and for how many miles?

First Volvo I have purchased. Too early to tell if it is the last. I usually will purchase a car based on the car itself, I have no brand loyalty. If I can afford and like a Volvo, BMW, GM and Chrysler product, I will go with whichever one I decide I like most after researching all.<p>As for how long I will keep it.... till I sell it I guess. I am a firm believer in EVERYTHING is for sale.

I have no cpo or vip by choice--> I'll gamble a bit with this but those vip warranties went up quite a bit in price. <p>I'll see if I'm volvo for life, but I sure plan to keep my R for as long as I can.<p>I say I'll see if I'm volvo for life because volvo seems to be neglecting those who prefer manuals except in entry level models so this may very well be my last volvo. I stumbled on the R after finding out s40 redesign nixed the t5 6sp here in the us. I couldn't be happier for that short term decision as I love my R! It is disappointing the loss of the true R line for now, I hope it comes back. No, I've owned 12 Volvo cars over the past 20 years and have a V50 T5 in addition to the 05 VR. Plan to keep the VR indefinitely, and my son is learning to drive using the V50. He'll probably take it to college. <p>I was planning to pick up an RS4 this summer but decided to wait for the new S4 Avant. Looks like I'll be waiting for some time. My parents baptized me with volvos.<p>Our family has had 7, the last two being mine and mine alone (850 T5-R, although I didnt get the cool badging <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/frown.gif" BORDER="0"> ) and my SR GT.<p>I plan on buying a 06-07 SR MT sometime in the next two years. The GT is my "Starter R"

After almost 8 months and 18,000 miles in the car I can say I'm hooked on the R and everybody here at SS. Cant say I'll keep it forever, but would like to hang onto it even if I get another car after 100K. I can honestly say R's are very rare in Houston and I have seen only 1 on the road in this area since I bought. Newbie here.<p>Never liked the styling on the volvos until the recent model (2000 forward) S60 's came out. The R was the baddest volvo I had ever seen, and when I read about it I had to have one. <p>Regarding my family my mom has a 2002 S 40 and my uncle has an old '95 850. <p>I plan on keeping mine until the wheels come off...or at least until the cost of repairs become prohibitive. Something tells me maintaining the R for 10 years is going to be EXPENSIVE. <p>

This is my 3rd Volvo.. had a 96 850 GLT which was great, then stepped up to a 98 V70 T5 which was awesome, and now just upgraded to my R.<p>I'll stay committed to Volvo as long as they make quality cars. I do believe in brand loyalty to a point, but I think sometimes people take it way too seriously. I do love the Volvos I've had.<br>

Newbie here <p>For the most part I'd classify myself as a newbie. My first Volvo was my wife's S80 AWD. After owning it for a few months, and driving through a winter, I knew that I loved the car. I then got too looking for a car for myself with requirements of 4 door, sporty and fun to drive with somewhat decent back seat room. My brother mentioned the R to me (while I was contemplating Mazdaspeed6's, M3's, WRX's, etc...). I really love my car and haven't looked back. I plan on keeping my car for 6 years or longer. I am sure I'll have a Volvo in the household for quite some time, and if a new version of a real R were to ever surface it would probably keep me from wandering to another make.

1st car: Volvo 1989(?) 240 DL with 267 k on the clock... learned how to drive in this tank, it was also manual + overdrive. Died and was donated.<p>2nd car: 1994 Geo Prizm. Cheap. (student years... all $$ -> <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/embeer.gif" BORDER="0"> ) Died due to girlfriend mixing up gas and brake pedal. Seemed to be made out of Aluminum foil so didn't fare well...<p>3rd car: Ahhhh.. 1998 Volvo V70, 142k. Died in a sleet condition 60 mph frontal collision courtesy of a Nissan Altima with summer race tires..This is when I really fell in love with Volvo..... some links / strut work otherwise fine.<p>4th car: Another 1998 V70, 170k <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://********************/smile/emlove.gif" BORDER="0"> Still serving proud as the GF primary means of transportation. Air mass meter replaced, so far nothing else.<p><br>5th car: 1991 Volvo 940 turbo, 202k. Left me stranded a few times due to a faulty $20 fuel pump relay. Then decided to strand me again by jamming the intercooler fan and trying to create fire. Turbo was also in poor shape: leaking oil through the ceramic seal, and a whole list of smaller things to make it pass inspection. Sold for parts at the local repair shop.<p>6th car: 2004 S60 R, 65k when bought, now 73k. Absolutely nicest car I have driven (includes rental crap mobiles). Just cannot beat it. Had RR wheel bearing replaced under CPO warranty. Owned them for about 11 years now (1998 XC was the 1st)<br>We need at least ONE 4WD-AWD to get out in the winter, killer driveway and street and I have no need for trucks and was tired of big SUV's.<br>It was perfect and the side benefit were the killer comfortable seats!<br>My back is not getting any better and I can't drive too many other cars for long periods of time which is why I'm sticking with Volvo for the time being.<br>When the 06R goes I probably will still keep at least ONE 98-00 Volvo most probably one of my R's<br>My 2 older R's are near perfect but unfortunately cost a lot to keep them that way

First Volvo for me....hopefully not last. Let's hope they make something that will interest me as much as the R. Mine has 74,*** miles and I'm hoping to keep it another 4 years...hoping it will last 60,000 more miles.

Parents got a V70R wagon. Not bad, but quirky. Ride was too harsh for what it was. Ground clearance was abysmal as were the headlights... The replaced it with a v8 XC90. Much better package. <p>Me, I just sold my XC70 and now I'm in a 335xi <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/wink.gif" BORDER="0"><p>I am a huge fan of turbo/awd. I would consider going back to volvo, but the bimmer is a lot of fun to drive!
