Re: R Design 2010..Possible (philisophe)

The 2010 OSD spec's are out and several models are available in R design. I am suprised at the cost but you do get a little more. I think the V70 R design is the best of the bunch, but I am partial to wagons. I just wish I knew this was coming before I picked up my 70 last month.

What about the NA DI IS6? Could we see this motor in the 2010's?
OR what about a re-tuned version of the current IS6? It needs a 10-15 HP bump.

Re: R Design 2010..Possible (Needsdecaf)

This is lip-stick on a pig. Compass in the rear view mirror, WOWIE ! Max has said more times than I can count that he needs a practical car for practical people that he can sell in volume and at decent margin. So this $2,000 cosmetic job is that? I don't think so. No improvement in weight, performance, mileage, etc.
Now our sales professionals have said, again more times than I can count, that Volvo can't offer options in the US because its too expensive. So how can they find the ability to offer a compass in the rear view mirror, but they can't find the ability to offer a V70 with T6, 4C, R, DI, more colors, etc.
Wake me when something important happens. ho, hum.
(Needs, I don't remember you being reticent about posting your personal opinions)

Your opinion is of course welcome and valid, however your last post is a lot more substantive and at least gives a reason for your opinion.
Compass in the rear view mirror is an option on the other cars...it is not R-design exclusive.
And actually, there are performance options. Larger wheels, lowered and stiffer suspension, different steering rack and power assist setup count in my book. More highly bolstered seats go well in the package.
It is not an R, it is R-Design. Yes, it is largely a cosmetic job, but so what? If that doesn't toot your horn, great, don't buy it. When you consider the amount of equipment the package includes above and beyond what is standard, it isn't a bad deal, to be honest.

What is lameness to some is pithiness to others.
The R-design package is fine as far as it goes, but until Volvo does something about the 235 hp 3.2 engine in the US, its just lip-stick.
I got a chuckle out of thinking about Needs drifting his 235 HP R-design V70 and watching the compass spin.

It's no R, and I'd miss my R. But from my perspective:
I have one SUV, and do not desire another.
Yet I have 3 sets of family / relatives that are 5 hours away. I have one 2 year old and hopefully will have another. To go away for the weekend requires something with the cargo space of a wagon or SUV.
Most other wagons are too small...A4 is small, even the 5 series and E class are smaller, although not by much.
So the V70 is perfect for me.
The R design accents make the car appealing whereas in base form it is not. Note, I will not buy it in FWD 3.2 form. I would in T6 AWD form, though.

Re: R Design 2010..Possible (Needsdecaf)

I can't see myself stepping down to the 3.2 fwd either. The current V70 is nice looking, but I think the P2 is on the whole a lot more handsome design. The new one is bland, but that is better I suppose than ugly (on the whole I think the current V70 looks like a freezer on wheels). I would consider a T6 R-design without much enthuisiam. I think the wheels are uninspired and the roof rails have to go. It looks to me that it rides higher than an R, which I don't like. The bells and whistles you mentioned are fine, but at the end of the day, I think I am still more interested in a CTS Sport Wagon, a used A6 Avant, and if the stock market ever comes back a XF estate. In my heart, nothing under 100K has more panache than a Jaguar and it would be my first choice.

Steering is like turning a freaking rheostat, it makes the R feel like a Lotus Elise. The 300 HP Supercharged V6 was overwhelmed by it's bulk as well.
CTS Sport Wagon....I'll have to see about that when it comes out in person. Then there is the GM question...
XF Estate? What XF Estate? Haven't heard about that in any of the British car mags.

Re: R Design 2010..Possible (Needsdecaf)

XF Estate is supposed to be at Frankfurt in September. XF-R 5 litre V8, 510 HP tops off the range. I figure the base 300 HP model will be in at $53,750 MSRP. Jaguar cuts great deals and so I figure with the recession and some wheeling-dealing you are going to see some excellent opportunities.
