I just need to rant.
My dream car is pretty much done for. I got into an accident today(first one) and the whole front end is pretty much damaged. I'm not sure to what extent the engine is damaged but based on the first hand view, it looked pretty bad. If it is repairable, it'll never be the same. Thankfully the officer at the scene was a nice guy and he was actually looking into purchasing an R. So talking to him about the car helped as we got pretty friendly. It was funny when he said, "don't worry, I got your back buddy". The report was written up saying that it was her fault so hopefully some good new will come in the future.

Re: R curse continues...accident today (tRio)

Sorry to hear of your accident. I had my first real accident ever in my 05 R. Here's a pic.
I hit a guy at 50mph who decided to turn right from the center lane. I barely felt it. 12k in damage. But I was ok - I was sold before on the safety of Volvo - but will never again question it after my hit.
Do what I did - wait for the settle and go get yourself a new one!
Stephen

Re: R curse continues...accident today (tRio)

FYI... Don't let a bodyshop lowball your insurance carrier with the initial quote(s). This happened to me with a previous vehicle after someone rear-ended it on the interstate. The initial estimate was $2-3K, so the insurance carrier naturally chose to repair the damage. The final repair bill was north of $12K and I was left with a car that never felt/performed the same. I suspect that car would have been totaled if the extent of the damage was reported to the insurance carrier upfront. I'm still ticked about that one. Grrrr...
Good luck and, more importantly, glad you are okay. Were you generally impressed with the R's ability to resist the impact forces? I'm curious about this since the published crash test results are lower than I would have expected.
- Tryg

To be honest, I thought it actually performed really well in the crash. Considering I hit the side of the car head on, I sustained nothing but a scratch on my arm because of the deployed airbag. So I can conclude by first hand experience that volvo's are indeed safe cars.
I would assume that the damage on the car is more than 15k. A good portion of the front is just...literally gone. I'll try getting some pics up soon.

Re: (tRio)

It sounds like a complete total, which (emotions aside) is definitely what you want in this situation. It's gone my friend... time to find a new dream car. If you still have the option, take it to a higher-end repair shop if you can to keep the estimate as high as possible.
- Tryg

Sorry to hear of your accident. I was in an accident six months ago and the repair work was close to 10 grand for front and rear bumper covers, headlights, hood, radiators- airbags and fenders were okay. Yours sounds worse than that and hopefully will be totalled.

I know I would be suing if I was deemed "at fault" when I am the one who got T-boned.
Another guy (parkstephen, second post) hit someone, while going 50 mph, who was trying to make a right turn from the center lane. tRio was a separate accident and T-boned another driver who presumably ran a light or something like that. Read a little more carefully before you get so critical.

The car can be repaired or replaced.
My mother had a similar accident 18 months ago. She was on a county road that has a 50 MPH limit. It is 4 lanes, undivided and unrestricted. She was travelling in the right lane, Northbound.
A car travelling Southbound decided to make a left directly in front of her. She barely had time to come off the gas, let alone brake, before she hit the car. She plowed directly into the passenger side of the turning car, and spun it into a third car waiting to pull out on the street driver B was turning left onto.
The driver of the third car, remarkably enough, was the only one injured and sued. During deposition, the driver of the car making the left said, under oath, that he never saw my mother, and repeatedly admitted fault. It was nighttime, and yes she did have her headlights on. Her brand new (2,400 miles) Toyota was totaled. Driver B has admitted fault both at the scene and in court.
So it can happen legally, know the facts.

Re: R curse continues...accident today (needsdecaf)

AND - to add about my accident. I did not TBone anyone. I hit the right rear quarter panel of a toyota tacoma truck. He ALMOST made it into the parking lot from the center lane and I almost didnt' hit him as I braked very hard. I was on a six lane major thoroughfare (not freeway) with a posted speed in that area of 45.
Had he turned any later or i not braked...I could have tboned him.
Either way - BOTH insurance companies and police ruled it was HIS fault. Turning right from the center lane is a TON of people's bad habit here in LA.
-s-

Actually it was a T-Bone, although I didn't state that it was in the original post. I was going maybe 30-35 or so considering I was just coming off a highway exit. It just happened to be that the other driver JUST turned 17, which is minimum legal driving age in NY. So her inexperience pretty much was the cause.
The police reports states that it was due to an "improper turn" because she failed to check for other motorists. It was her fault to begin with, but it sure was nice for the cop to appreciate the beauty of the R. So technically, the cop was not messed up to the point where he would file an incorrect accident report. I will be posting pics once my buddy uploads the pics from his camera phone. I doubt it'll be good quality.
Thank you everyone for your kind posts.

Re: R curse continues...accident today (tRio)

Hey man, sorry to hear. I hit a tree a couple of months ago but it wasn't a head on crash. Moreso a sideswipe of the right fender. The hood was bent along the fender very slightly but the tree pretty much crunched only the fender. I didn't even know I hit the tree to be honest and no airbags deployed so I didn't think I hit anything. I tried to back out but when the car didn't move I got out to have a look and saw the fender was completely destroyed and my right front tire was completely gone. I barely even suffered any whiplash. My bud in the back seat took the worst of it (no WHIPS in the rear). I didn't have any engine/tranny damage though. The broad shoulders of the fender abosrbed all the impact and nothing in the engine bay broke (except the dip stick). Volvos have boron steel up front so they're very strong.
Insurance decided to repair the damage but I made them send the car to a certified Volvo collision and paint center as opposed to Macco (insurance recommended). In CA we have the right to have our vehicle repaired wherever we want.
The car's just about ready (about time). It's all put back together and being prepped for paint. The shop used 100% volvo genuine parts and will be inspected by the dealership prior to being released to me. I went to have a look at it today and aside from being dusty as all hell the fender and hood look perfectly in-line. I should have it back next week, yay!
If you're airbags deployed and you have engine damage (especially if the radiator was destroyed) I'm sure it will be totaled. Someone can check me on this but I remember hearing that if the airbags go off the seat-belts need to be replaced as well. At least you didn't get hurt.
