Re: R clutch (dhellz)

I think it was oclv that said he just replaced one at about 60k. There is no way a clutch should feel funny at 3k. If it gets worse, I know you will have the dealer check it out. I am pretty easy on clutches and have had them last well over 100k miles. But when oclv said it was $2k to replace his, I eased up on my clutch even more.
Jim

Re: R clutch (surfsd)

Dad (OCLV) got 75k miles out of his clutch and it was $2,600 to replace. Sounded high to me but I guess that is price wew pay for driving the R.

New clutch at 38k miles. I took it in for the axile spline fix and dealer said clutch was damaged too. Everything done under warranty.

Re: R clutch (cvs)

You must have a great dealer. Mine is going in for the axle spline fix (again) on Tuesday, and I wouldn't complain if I got a new clutch at 23k miles. I'm pretty light on the clutch as well, but there are times when it just doesn't feel as sharp as it did originally.

the clutch is covered under warranty? i would figure it was like tire wear. It is the driver that burns out a clutch...is it not?

Re: (JRL)

I have just always hated mine. Inconsistant and does not feel like a "performance" clutch... I liked the clutch on my buddy's Jetta GLI ten times better. Is there a good aftermarket clutch for the R... not like a tripple plate or anything, but a small step forward in performance??? I really want a new clutch.

Here is the link to someone's S60R with a blown clutch. BTW, no one admitted to owning the car.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=48780

so anyway....*ahem*...who makes a decent clutch upgrade, without it being a full-race disc, which we all know can be custom made?
JOSBRO: i think it might be a wise idea to wait until your clutch fails (or tranny, EEK!) before you consider an upgrade...only because of the horror stories of replacement costs that i am hearing about.
its not your typical $700-800 job in a nissan.

That's a pretty good point. I'd like to imagine in my own little world that all 300hp AWD sport sedans come with performance clutches... this is the same world, mind you, in which they can make a 360 degree turn entirely within one zip code, so I guess maybe my world is slightly warped. Please do tell me the R's clutch is not the same as the other models.... Is this the case?
BTW, Matt... good point about waiting.. but I just hate it so much! And the thing is... there is nothing "wrong" with it...

Re: (JOSBRO)

My clutch was just replaced this week. 14,500 miles.
I have always thought something was wrong, ever since I bought it. The first symptom (first week of ownership) was random stalling after I would push the clutch in when coasting to the first traffic light at the end of my street - the idle would dip, almost as if I hadn't pushed the clutch in, and the car would die. From the beginning I have had trouble getting it into gear when cold too. Also, randomly the transmission would chatter violently when I pushed in the clutch while changing gears. As time went on I began to notice chattering and vibration when releasing the clutch slowly in first gear (felt almost like the engine was mis-firing).
Finally, last week I was in traffic (in Harlem of all places) and the clutch seemed to "slip and then catch". After about 5 minutes I began to smell the dreaded "clutch burning" smell. Once underway on the highway everything seemed fine and the smell went away.
I took the car in to get looked at and they ended up replacing the slave cylinder and the clutch.

Re: (JJRedRNYC)

I actually had a clutch replaced in my old car at 40k miles and had it covered under warranty. It was a 03 Tiburon and apparently that year the clutch was junk and there was a TSB to replace it for free. It took a ton of work to get it done for free because the dealership kept saying the TSB I had was bogus, but after a few calls they agreed to replace it for free. Saved me $2k. I have a friend who had an 04 Tiburon the clutch went at 18k miles and they made him pay to replace it.
