Has the R undergone any significant changes since its introduction that would make an '07 a better car than say an '04? Please no more chatter about the new turn signals in the rear view mirrors.

not to go "JRL" on you but this has been discussed many times in great detail and would be easily found via the search.

Re: R changes... (ACD)

How about the different tail lights or the body colored bumpers? Perhaps the chrome interior trim and the console cupholders?
Seriously though, other than a faster processor and a stereo change for 2005, nothing significant that I can remember. Some multiple R owners even say that the 2004 stereo has better sound.

Re: R changes... ([email protected])

So I should search for the pre-charged Haldex and the new Geartronic (as this will be my mother's car). As I said, I couldn't care less about the tailights being more glittery or the plastic intake tube. Last time I drove the R about three years ago...and was not impressed with power delivery. Felt like an old 900 turbo. Power off off off ON ON ON ON. Is there a chip or way to make the powerband more linear? I assume the new haldex will help and perhaps the new transmission will be geared differently...however I'm pretty sure I drove the manual version.
The advice and help is greatly appreciated. I've owned three Volvos and love them...however at this point the Audi seems like the winner. If Volvo has made the R better...by the way shouldn't there be a new one on the way? This model has been out since '01.

Also, Flash green was dropped in '06.
You must have driven a bum version, or driven it in scorching heat. Severe lag does not seem to be a characteristic of the R, unless you are just not used to the turbo's delivery method. It is a small turbo and does not take a while to spool like an old Saab or say Mitsubishi Eclipse.
Having said that, if you do find it laggier than you like, a larger turbo downpipe will certainly allow the turbo to spool faster. However, it is incompatable with at least one aftermarket ECU upgrade (BSR).
Chris also forgot to mention (and I mention it since you are talking about GT transmissions) that the '04 and '05 GT cars were hobbled with overall torque limitations, plus additional limitations in first and second gears. The manual has no such limitations and has remained consistent in power output (hah!) since day 1. I say hah because it seems that a) the car does not make the full 300 hp and b) some cars are stronger than others form the factory.
The R has been out only since the '04 model year. There was not supposed to be an '07 R but it was extended another MY for reasons unknown.
Car is very different from Audi, comes down to personal choice.

Re: R changes... (ACD)

If the current R is historically like any other Volvo model, then a new '07 should be "better" than prior model years from a reliability perspective. Some of the sundry TNN and other production and design flaws that affected an '04 should be remedied, or at least addressed, in an '07. Perhaps not all of them, but enough to make an '07 probably a more reliable long-term choice. That's not to say that you can't get the TNN fixes and corrections done to an '04, or that an '04 can't be reliable. But an '07 will have all the preceding revisions and refinements factory-installed. And some '07 advancements will simply not be retrofitable to an '04.

DP and CAI seriously improve lag issue.... and I'm surprised a boxter driver wouldn't be impressed with the R... I encountered an '04 Boxter on the highway a few weeks ago.... I'm pretty sure he was very impressed!

If you can't pull on a Honda Accord, or the Blazer ( If you are serious) you have a major LEMON. I think you are just being cute. Whith my new software I could pull on just about anything under 50K.

It totally fouls up how the car re-engages when pulling away from a light and makes the car seem much laggier than it is. Combine that with the GT's reduced torque in 1st and 2nd (which you would not have with an '06) and the car seems pretty laggy pulling away from a stop under normal conditions.

Though the GT now produces the advertised 295ft lbs, the advertised 0-60 times are still off by about a second versus the MT.

DP = Down Pipe and CAI = Cold Air Intake.
Boxter's are nice. Especially the S.

Car should make 230-240 WHP stock. If you can't outrun an old blazer, your car is definitely screwed up in some way. Of course, the Dyno does cost money.
You could also take it to the dealer, but you may get the "that's the way it normally runs" response from them.
Anyone have any 5-60 MPH times so you can take clutch engagement out of the question? That would be another way, try timing yourself 0-60 and compare against what others have gotten.
