How good are the two engine offerings for the XC90? Have they been around for any length of time? I mean, how reliable are they, how do they sound, how smooth, etc.?
Also, does anyone have any photos of the 2.5T or the 2.9T engines? I haven't seen any & I'm real curious as to what they look like, esp. the 2.9T.
If anyone can post pix or post a link that I could go to I'd really appreciate it.
Sorry for all the questions but I'm new to Volvo's so I'm not too familiar with them.
Thanks.

I'll have to see if I can dig up a pic. The T-6 has been built in the S80 since 1999 so nothing new there. While the 2.5T is new, the 2.4T has also been in production for several years. The 2.5T is simply built for more torque from what I've heard.

Hey Drew, thanks!
Nice pic. I have an I-6 in my Jeep but it looks alot different than that.
I like the air-intake, doesn't look too restrictive.
I'd like to find a schematic of that engine, to see what's-what in it & how it operates...

I have to think that these are pretty good motors. My last experience with a Volvo motor was a 6 cyl turbo diesel, back in the mid 80's. While it was a good engine, it was made by VW, and was a sleeved engine, which would have made it expensive to rebuild. Volvo has been building turbo motors for a long time, and should have the technology down by now. I need the higher preasure turbo of the T6, as I live at 5000', and the turbo recovers the HP lost to altitude. My ML430 has 268 HP at sea level, but when you account for a 10% HP loss per 1000", I'm down to approx. 170HP @ 5000'. The XC90 T6 won't suffer that huge loss.

Thanks Pat. I thought they would be good, just wanted another opinion.
I'm gonna go thru all my back issues of Motor Trend, R&T, Automobile, etc & see if I can find any articles or comparo's that mention the 2.9T engine, or even the older 2.4T.

In either C&D or Automo. mag there is write up on the S80, which has the T6 motor, and in one of them there is a long term test on a V70, which had the T5 motor. The crux of both articles was the the motors were a little slow off the line until the turbo spooled up.. That being said, I think both of the engines in the XC90 have smaller turbos, which spool up faster. The torque curves of both would indicate so.

Hopefully it's Automobile Mag, C&D is one of the few mainstream auto mags I don't subscribe to.
I'll check thru my back issues & also online at Automob's site & online at C&D, maybe I'll get lucky.
Thanks!

Pat -
I found some articles online @ Car & Driver. One of them is probably what you referred to. Go here: http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/roadtests/2000/July/ 200007_roadtest_volvo_v70t5.xml?keywords=volvo
If the road test article doesn't appear just type in Volvo - there are a bunch of articles about the engines in the S60, V70 & V70 Cross Country.
Good reading.
Thanks for the suggestion.
