I think I am at wits end with the squealing breaks and break dust which I am experiencing with my R. The anti-vibration shims had no success. I am seriously considering the purchase of Hawk HPS pads based on the multiple positive reviews from this board. I am looking for a local installer recommendation in Seattle or the eastside who can help. The two places who I called are very gun shy on installing aftermarket parts on Volvos. If anyone has good experience somewhere, I would greatly appreciate the lead. Thank you.

Re: Question for WA state R owners (gaven)

Gaven,
I have had no squeal from my brakes. I don't know if they made a change from '04 to '05 or I have just been lucky.
I'd suggest you return the car to the dealer and have them fix it under warranty.
 Good luck

I still get some squeal, even with aftermarket pads.
However, no dust...
This guy is great. A little bit of a drive, but worth it: http://www.remptmotorco.com

Did the shims initially cure the squeal? I had Sandberg address the problem at around 12,000 miles and they did successfully eliminate the squeal, but it's worth noting that they both added the shims and replaced the rear pads for free at the same time. I just turned 20,000 miles with no recurring noises from the brakes whatsoever. I say if you are still covered by the warranty, take it to Sandberg and talk to David Bushnell in Service.
- Tryg

I second Frank's recommendation. Highly.
There's no better independent Volvo shop with Volvo-certified techs in the area IMO. But you'll have to go to Auburn.
If it can be sorted out, Joshua and his techs will sort it out for you.

Re: Question for WA state R owners (gaven)

Thanks everyone. That is great. What is odd (not being technical about this), if I were to wash the rims for example the squeal vanishes for about the first 20 miles or so. It is almost as though there is a film or something on the rotors causing the squeal. I don't get it. When I take my car into Barrier to ask them to address this, I've noticed they have NEVER repeated my squeal complaint (weird). But what I have found out is they wash my car first before servicing it. I think the next time i take it in, I will ask them to NOT wash my car and help me identify the the source of the problem. Very very annoying. The shims probably helped for the first 50 miles or so. It is driving me nuts.
