Ok so last time i was in due to my chassis service setting required warning light i was told my front struts are shot (one is done the other is on the way out). and that the SUM module is malfunctioning/error/not working.
They want $596 for the SUM module at the dealer (have to go there cuz there are NO indys here in central florida that can do VADIS/SUM that i have found).
So i called V&S and found one out of a dismantled S60R and they will lifetime warranty it for $200.
Before i do this i call a volvo dealer and ask service tech and he tells me that the modules have to be matched to the chassis and if mine is not working i HAVE to get it through volvo because one out of another car/used will not work.
IS there truth to this or they trying to just get the $600? and how the heck does the module quit working i dont get it...i mean i understand struts/shocks/sensors wearing out but how does an ECU module INSIDE the car stop working?

The matching process doesn't have to be done on a new part, IIRC, but it does need to be re-programmed by the dealer.

Give it a try! I had to replace my doors on my driver's side due to a deer running into me. Prior to that, my rear driver's side lock wouldn't always follow the others. Most likely the issue was the control module in the door. After replacing with used doors (including the modules), everything worked honky-dory!
For some things, the modules need to be paired with the car. But, for most (it seems) they just need to be activated. Once they are, you can swap them between cars.
(Oh. What's the "SUM" anyway? )

A used one WILL work fine. It WILL need to be reprogrammed at the dealer. If they tell you it won't work they're full of dookie.
I replaced mine on my R, with a used one, no problemo.
V&S on the other hand....not another dime from me.
Bought a module from them with their "lifetime guarantee". The numbers I gave them did not match the module they sent me. They told me to go ahead and try it and if it didn't work to send it back. Did just that, didn't work, sent it back. No refund. Their stance is this, on the back of the reciept it does clearly state no returns on electrical parts.
I mail ordered it, was promised it would work or return it.
Ripped me off for close to $300 bucks.
Use your own discretion.
