Question about sighting post (for the moderators)

Regarding the sticky sighting post in this forum, how useful can it be unless everybody is checking the thread every day? That's provided people check in here everyday and that's only a handful.
If I post "hey, red S60, I saw you, are you there?", chances are Mr. Red S60 won't see it, as he's not going in that thread unless he's going to post a sighting himself. No wonder most/all posts in there are the "are you there"-type and not the "that was me"-type.
Why not allow sighting posts in the main forum? After all, this is the most active forum on SS, but hardly the most active automotive forum on the net.

Re: Question about sighting post (Razor1973)

I have to agree with you about the usefullness of that sticky thread. I saw it for the first time last week, and thought, "hey, how long has that been there?" Then, I promptly ignored it until now. Funny thing is I just moved, and have seen 3 other R's in the last week, after seeing 3 "in the wild" over the past two years. I never had the inclination to post about it in that thread though.

On the flip side of things, I think this community in general doesn't want to be flooded with sighting in the general discussion. There are WAY more R's on the road than there are members of this forum, so 99% of the time, the answer is no, that isn't a forum member's car. You always do wonder though.

It's not useful. I never check that thing. If you do, you have to scroll through pages and pages of stuff. Poor me on dial-up

If SS would allow you to search within a thread, then I could always go in once a week or so and search the word "Miami" (provided the person typed that word in his/her report)... until I get tired of doing that. But SS doesn't let you do that.
I think a sighting FORUM is in order.

Maybe you could check the R-book and see if a similar car lives near-by. Then shoot off an IM asking "was that you"? --- Or is that beginning to sound too much like "stalking".
Re: Question about sighting post (Mash)

I think a sighting forum would be R-specific by nature.
Most people won't spend time posting a sighting unless its an R just because there are too many non-R volvos out there that are driven by non-enthusiasts.
...imho

From those, the percentage of people who have added themselves to the registry (or even know about it) is quite small too. Of those who have, not everyone has used the same user name they use in the forums, so no way to send an IM... And so on...
We need a dedicated forum for that.

Re: Question about sighting post (Razor1973)

I like individual sighting posts, if the original poster could delete them after a few days if there is no actions that might be better but it's pretty cool when a sighting post works and a couple of people hook up that otherwise wouldn't. Especially those that live outside of major metropolan area's.
