Ok, Here is another post about the AC not blowing cold. Now before I get flamed, I have searched these forums and google over and over and I get sooooo many different possibilities. Here is my situation.

I have a 2010 XC90 3.2 6 cylinder. The AC will only blow cold when the vehicle is moving. When it is at idle / stop, it starts to heat up. It doesn't go in and out while driving just warms up at idle. I have had the Hi and low checked and they are within spec. The compressor clutch is turning when the AC is on and doesn't stop when at idle. The cooling fan is running at all times the engine and or AC is on. The AC high side is hot and the low side is cold when the AC is running and cooling. When at idle both are not working the same. I Have tested that the problem only happens when the engine is at idle because when I rev up the RPMs, it will start cooling like it should.

I have read that some folks say its the whole compressor and others say its a solenoid or a pressure switch. My problem is that all of the posts I have read only gives advise on the AC not blowing cold when driving or it will go from cold to warm back to cold while driving. I cant find anything that states only at idle like mine.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Is it noisy? you can hear a growl when you turn it on and off from the button. Mine acted just like that and the whole compressor was replaced. It is now starting to do it again at 120k miles later so right now, I am super glad that I had the dealer do it.

No, actually its still pretty quite. You can barely hear it go on and off.

Maybe not much help to you but ours also made noise and was replaced on warranty at 80000km.

I really don't like going to the dealer but maybe in your case they could at least diagnose the problem.

It's likely the solenoid, the compressor is a variable duty type which is determined by a number of input variables whether stationary at idle or on the road. The valve is relatively inexpensive and easy to replace it's worth doing before you move on to more costly compressor replacement. There are several threads with the PN and how to. On the V8 it's at the bottom of compressor on the bottom of the engine accessory side not sure where it live one the 3.2.

Thanks for the info. When you are talking about the Solenoid are your meaning the Control Valve that is located on the bottom of the compressor? If so, is this something that can be replaced? I have searched all over for info on replacing it but could not find anything.

Thanks,

Make sure your radiator cooling fan is operating properly. You need airflow over the condenser for the ac to work properly and if the cooling fan is not operating, you will not have ac sitting at idle but it will perform ok when the vehicle is in motion.
Fwiw, I have seen a few failed compressors (3) in the last 60 days. Also could be the control valve on the compressor as peterz123 has mentioned.
