Hi everyone,
Im new to this forum. Used to own a 1984 240 Turbo with a 5 spd years ago. I am currently looking to buy a pre-owned XC 90 T6. I was hoping I could get some pointers from experts (yourselves) and also form anyone who has one, with an opinion to share. I heard about the chip upgrade that was available and really got excited. I plan on using synthetic oil in the engine. And possibly synthetic tranny fluid. Both from Royal Purple.
Keith

I started out wanting a T6 and wound up buying a V8. I drove all three engine types and once I drove the V8 I was sold. I think it gets about as good of gas mileage as the T6 engine and not much worse than the regular 5 cylinder, which I got to drive for about two months while awaiting the V8 I had ordered. All three types are very nice in my opinion, but the 4 speed in the T6 is a drawback I guess, depending on the price you can buy it for. I am very pleased with our V8 but the Volvo service reps don't impress me very much at my local dealership. They are very nice but not very knowledgeable, but I think most visitors on this forum, like myself, are very anal about our cars and tend to know more than the average owner. I'm sure some of the T6 owners will chime in and give you their experience. Good luck in your purchase as we reallly enjoy our XC90.

C130, on an unrelated note, I notice that you have the Wing Bars on your roof rack. Have you had any noise issues with them?

I have had zero noise issues with them. I have not noticed any difference at all and I have had them on since last October.

Re: purchasing a pre owned XC90 T6 (keith718)

Hi Keith,
My T6 has been rather problem-free after an initial issue that was promptly corrected by my dealer. The engine/transmission set still has the old hesitation on the 1-2 shift which is more tolerable after the last software upgrade.
Personally, I'd hesitate to try a chip upgrade on the T6 because of the continuous allegations that the tranny may be near its limit already. Other engine models may be more tolerant of chipping (they use different trannies).
Happy hunting

In my humble opinion, I think the T6 has some 'undocument' extra boost at higher speeds. ...cant explain it any better but for a fully occupied xc90 to pull that way at 70-80mph, to me means it either has good gearing or has a little extra boost. ...this you got to try for yourself.

The T6 has some awesome power on the highway, even with a full load. Also, the mileage improves dramatically once it is at highway speeds. The T6 simply loves the speed!

I've owned a couple of T6 Volvos (including XC90) and now the V8. As long as it's been maintained I can't say there's anything inherently wrong with the T6. I will say the V8 doesn't put out the heat of the T6, doesn't have worse fuel economy and might be slightly better, and has more power.
If I were buying used I would rank them highest to lowest as V8, T6, 2.5t. The 2.5t might be second on the list instead of third if you don't plan to haul around a lot of weight or do any towing.

IMO, go for the V8 if you can swing it.
