Proud new R owner!!!! HELP???

1529 Views 20 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Overun73
I am a new R owner, that has never owned ANY other volvo before, and have read several posts about the pros and cons about the R's. The dealer I got it from is great but I always worry about trusting a dealer! Can anyone help me learn more about my R and what I should be looking for if I suspect a problem, or have already had one?

Any and all help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Nice first post. You just killed a kitten.

Just start reading all the threads on here man. Read the faq's. Read until your eyes bleed.
Re: Proud new R owner!!!! HELP??? (Overun73)

year? gt or manual? that will help narrow down specifics on your car, otherwise read the threads on the board for a while, you'll learn a ton about your car and learn what to look for

some common ones,

angle gear,
comments about how great our turning radius will never be
exhuast bracket removal to protect drive shaft
rain squeal (howling banshee?
) --> JRL Mod
others depend on year, transmission

congrats! post pics of the new R and welcome to SS

Re: (kmagnuss)

LOL - a bit harsh kmagnuss...

He is right tho - from one noob to another - Read Brutha!
Also: 1) Remove tailshaft wrecking Bracket 2) Remove exhaust resonator 3) If you have winglets - never let anyone drive your car without taking an imprint of their credit card.

Oh and by the way - welcome!

Welcome!

NO offense, but you are starting off on the wrong foot. Don't be a hypochondriac. If you look for problems, you will be chasing ghosts forever.

Read through the FAQ thread, pay attention to the TNN list (Tech Net Notes, a service bulletin). Those are common problems.

Trust me, the car is not so spooky that you will not know if you have a problem. You will know.

So enjoy! If you have a problem, let us know and we will help. Until then, relax!

P.S. Go 'Pards!

Thank you everyone, my R is an '04 GT with evrything except the 18" Pegs. I am already experiencing a Check Engine light, the diag on it is a long term fuel issue. And its puffing oil smoke, the diag on that is a clogged breather box, but it seems to have a bit too much turbo lag. Any thoughts would be great!

Thanks Again

Repeat after me, the time to do your homework is BEFORE buying the car.

Also, the GT is torque neutered in 1st and 2nd gear and detuned at the peak from 295 to 258 versus the MT.

An 04 under warranty? Either CPO or third party. If you're still within the three day return window.......you know what to do next.

That is probably a good thing. Think Angle Gear

Whose warranty?
When you ask questions you also need to POST YOUR MILEAGE
A clogged breather box is usually on a 100K mile Volvo that's been neglected.
If it's all clogged up with goop, everything is clogged including the turbo and it's passages
Re: Proud new R owner!!!! HELP??? (Overun73)

Hey Overun...welcome to the R community. I've only been around since Dec when I bought my '04 GT with 75k miles on it.

I will give you a heads up...reading over the wealth of knowledge on this site and seeing all the issues that can come up may freak you out a bit. I had owned a '98 S70 T-5 so knew a bit about Volvo ownership and what I've learned here initially had me doubting my purchase and wondering if I should sell before my bank account began direct depositing to the local indy mechanic or Volvo stealership.

I agree your issue sounds a bit concerning so definitely get it checked out. For all the other things you'll find could go wrong with the caR, try and forget about them until they happen, if they ever do. I would, however, recommend checking your upper engine mount...bet it's shot like mine was.

And depending on how much longer warranty lasts...it may be time to start thinking about mods...

Re: Proud new R owner!!!! HELP??? (Bdubs)

Seriously, if you sit around and wait for R problems to crop up, you aren't going to enjoy the car at all. We make it seem like everyone has issues, but there are a few Rs that have lead normal lives.
Re: Proud new R owner!!!! HELP??? (GiRaff3)

One word - "maintenance"

Keep a good record of the maintenance required - everything but Volvo recommended fluid change intervals.

Your car was obviously not maintained properly. It may cost some significant $$ to get it to zero stage (search), but once there the car should be fairly easy to maintain. To put it simply, take care of it today and avoid worrying about what's going to happen. From my experience, if the car is not brought up to spec, you will continue to have problems. IMO, if this can't be done, probably better to sell it.
