As some of you might know, I have been working on some supreme trickery to make a fully functional projector retrofit for our cars that will not set off all of the holiday lights on the cluster and still work with our suspension/leveling/whatever systems.
I have been jumping from project to project and have had the bracket marked and ready to cut to shape for my first true test fit, but have not gotten the motivation to have small shards of aluminum splattered across my 'workshop.' Reading everyone's 'doom and gloom' about the R lamps in the "Ask VCNA" thread, I wonder, how much interest is there REALLY?
The idea is simple - take out the whole DRL housing and internal 'bracket' from the factory headlamp, detach all of the headlamp internals, replace most of them onto a CNC'ed plate that will re-attach to factory mounting points, and affix a fancy bi-xenon projector. If you are feeling fancy, you can do some Bondo work to the silver 'shroud' inside the lamp, or some other sort of visual modification to hide the new innards.
That being said, once the lamp is off the car and the glass is separated from the housing (that's the tricky part), the rest would be very simple and 'plug and play.' How many folks would be interested in actually buying a 'kit' to do this themselves? How much would you be willing to pay?
The only caveat, at the moment as I have not addressed the issue at all (not meaning that it can't be done) is that the DRL would be disconnected. If I do make further progress, I can most likely find a way to fit a bulb (or resistor) to accommodate the DRL?

I'd pay $250 for the kit including the glass lens.

There would be no glass lens (it'd be your old one - which isn't available in the US as a serviceable part, and is $250/ea side from ViVA)... it would a kit w/ a projector (and bulbs maybe) to replace your headlamp innards.

Is there an option for folks like me who don't feel comfortable taking apart the expensive lamps?
maybe use a donor set to do swaps ala MightyQ gauge?

A simple download for 05-07's removes the DRL function and the error message.
2004's are a different story

Re: Projector Retrofit - How Much Interest is There Really? (JRL)

I posted a question in the IPD forum if they would be able to source the high beam parts from the euro headlights directly from Valeo. If they, or anyone else could do this and rebuild the headlights, it seems that this would be the easiest solution. Then all you would need to do is go to the dealer and get the software for the euro headlamps. This is just a thought, I have no idea if it can acutally be done.

Volvo owns the tooling for these lamps - that will not happen in the foreseeable future (through the front door at least)...
MightyQ was offering his services to 'chrome' the housing. It's not the same pattern, but it's a vast improvement. The wiring is as simple as a splice.

So what would the final headlights look like? If the DRLs are replaced by bi-xenon projectors, what would happen with the existing xenon reflectors?
Are you saying that the final result would have two sets of xenons - bi-xenon projectors and reflectors?
I would have to know more but I may be interested if you can fit some TL projectors in there (I know they are really big but I still like to dream).

i'd be interested for sure depending on how it looks/functions.
i'm debating euro lights but can't justify the expense right now. I actually like the drl-I don't like how useless it is. i like it as i don't ever have to remember to turn lights on in cases where it pretty light out yet some road spray. been pulled over for using wipers without headlights on. 10am in the morning because of road spray
So.....
I'd ideally like drl replacement that functioned as a high beam but yet stayed on (dimmed) as a normal drl. or if others could turn it off via software download if that is what they prefer.
In one of the euro light threads, Jim Lill outlined how the euro lights could have drl functionality along with the true high beam operation. I was going to do it but the thought of ordering the euro lights and slicing them open right away seemed daunting. Other mods have come first.
here is that thread: http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=18370

Quote, originally posted by JimLIll »

Full replacement with Euro headlamps is by far the easiest. I can provide details on how to make the inner high beam boost lamps on the euro into reduced intensity DRL.
If someone knows how to get the VADIS work done to make the HID be the full-time DRL, you don't even need that. Just a subtle rewire. This same wiring approach would work for the modified quasi-Euro version.

I could be down with one of your kits, LMK if you need a BETA tester

Re: Re: (I Roll)

I was going to have a bi-xenon projector go where the current low/high would go now. My thoughts for a "DRL" were to use 1-3 high power white LED's and drive them using the 'base' as a heat sink. If they didn't draw enough juice, I'd throw in a resistor or two.
The other ideas were to use just a standard filament bulb and have a 'glow' inside the housing, or hook up a halogen bulb in some sort of reflector or projector. Not at that stage yet though.
