After augmenting our C30 with bigger wheels, a new body kit, and adding significantly more punch with an IPD/MTE ECU upgrade, we decided to explore other areas to continue upgrading our C30. With more air being pumped through the engine as a result of higher boost from the ECU upgrade, removing some of the bottlenecks in the forced induction system became our next priority. We decided to start removing restrictions by replacing the small factory intercooler with a larger and freer-flowing unit.
Full Story
I'm surprised you went with an intake and not a downpipe. You'd see much better gains from the latter. I'm also surprised the intercooler install is so laborious! I was considering doing an upgrade this year and thought it was going to be a simple matter of removing the front bumper, unscrewing a couple ring clamps, and voila. Good to know...

Re: Project C30: K&N Intake and Bell Intercooler Add Mor ... (dugforrester)

I've been driving Project C30 this week and I did not notice throttle lag, quite responsive actually.
With the current setup, I think it will probably pull on my Stage 1 MkV GTI. FINALLY! This thing pulls very nice from 2200 rpm or so on up. This C30 is very traction challenged. I came away impressed, and we haven't done a downpipe and exhaust yet.
Awesome! So cool to see the performance mods you've chosen for the C30 and your impressions of how it performs!
I have the same mods on my C30: Stage 1 IPD tune, Bell intercooler, K&N Typhoon, (plus I added a Heico exhaust... freakin' excellent burbling and growling from those pipes!)... Totally glad to see you think the IC and K&N added to the power. I added both mods on the same day and thought the car's throttle response was better and that the car pulled harder. Tire smoking! The sucking sound of the intake above 4000 rpm is a thing of beauty!
Even more interesting to hear you think it may get the best of a tuned GTI!
Are you thinking downpipe in the near future?

none yet. i am hoping we can get some WHP numbers, cause without video or documentation, it didn't happen.

It's decent in factory forum, but these upgrades completely transform the car. I hope I was able to make that evident in the article.
- Anthony

Add an intercooler and intake to a GTI, and I really wonder which would win. I have driven a GTI with an APR chip, EVOMS intake, and APR downpipe and it is extremely quick.

Quote »

Are you thinking downpipe in the near future?

I am not sure. To be honest, I am very happy with the power output of the car currently.
I just dropped an e-mail to one of my contacts at VW and we're going to try and dyno a chipped 2.0T and the C30 to see how the power compares. Once I get the dyno, we'll either run a new article or likely just add it to the current one.
- Anthony
Just looking at the factory airbox you can see that it is a huge bottleneck. To free up the breathing, I wanted to get the airbox out of there. This is a more cost effective upgrade rather than just a downpipe, as the downpipe will just move your restriction further down the exhaust system. If you do a downpipe, you should do a high flow cat and full cat back exhaust as well. For just simple bolt ons, the intake and intercooler are the way to go. Also, I love the sound of turbo'd cars with intakes - they are just damn cool!
And yes, the intercoller install is just as straight forward as you would imagine. Definitely call Bell and get their intercooler - you won't be disappointed. I was truly impressed with the quality of their product.
- Anthony

I know you said you're done, but I really would recommend the downpipe at least. I noticed a substantial difference with mine. I did a full exhaust as well but more for completeness and sound than anything. Intercooler wise, I'm torn between the Bell unit and the smaller Evolve unit. Anyway, very nice to see your C30 get some love.

Re: Project C30: K&N Intake and Bell Intercooler Add Mor ... (uv23)

that is a sweet sweet ride you got there!! congrats. I have the K&N also and love it, I could not find a good deal on ebay so I found a discount coupon here: K&N E-1970, or you can try one of the vendors on the forum here, you can usually find a good deal that way as well. This was very easy to install and I love it.
