Problem with steering on my 2008 S40 (Rattle in colum/steering wheel)

Hi guys,
1st post here and I'm hoping I can find out about a small problem I'm having. My dealer can't seem to fix my problem. I have a really bad rattle coming from inside the steering wheel or from the column. It only happends while I have the wheel turned to 11 o'clock or 1 o'clock and farther and going over bumps. It's very loud and is kind of plastic type clunk. It will not rattle or make any noise going straight, even over rough spots in the road. Only does it while the wheel is turned.
Thanks for any help or ideas I can pass on to my dealer so I can finally get this fixed.

I don't have an 08 so I can't really help, but if it is constantly doing it and it is for sure something with the steering wheel you should be able to request the dealer remove the wheel and replace with a new one, and while you are at it pay extra and get the sport steering wheel installed. Any possible defects with a steering wheel should be easy to get a new one since Volvo is all about safety, and if your steering wheel has any sort of issue it could potentially cause problems with your airbag if you ever had it deploy...

I have the EXACT same problem, so this cant be something that nobody knows about... CMON guys, whats the deal! One of you must have found the problem and fixed it.
I took my car to Osteen Volvo in Jacksonville, FL and they had no luck with it (and subsequently destroyed my interior panel work in the process.. idiots).... Gainesville Volvo diagnosed it as a front left strut problem and replaced it, but still, same noise. I have a friend with a 2004.5 that has the exact same problem. Nobody can figure it out.

Re: Problem with steering on my 2008 S40 (Kallvin22)

I'm almost 100% sure it is something in the steering wheel itself now. The more I hear it the higher the sound seems. I don't think it is in the steering colum.
I found a road that makes the noise really act up and I'm going to drive the service manager to it to have a listen. I'll post back.

I was just going to suggest maybe it's the airbag. However, why would it only happen when the wheel isn't straight over bumps?

It's not coming from behind the panel under the steering wheel (above knees) as this possibility has been examined. The sound resonates from the wheel or the instrument panel. Most likely the wheel, but how would the airbag assembly come loose?
There's an older post from another 2008 S40 owner having had the same issue but no followup or resolution was posted since: http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=95653
Let's keep this bumped! My local Volvo service manager is really being helpfull to get this fixed in my car. He is going to come with me to a road that has 4 really nice bumps on a long curve. It makes the rattle loudly and clear. We should be able to reproduce the noise several times over and over consistantly. I'll post back hopefully with the fix!

Update....sorry for the delay!
The dealer kept the car for 3 days and the service manager went for a ride with me so he could hear it 1st hand. They took the steering column and wheel apart and found nothing that was loose to cause the rattle. All other S40's and C30's on the lot do the same thing so the service manager who is also a Volvo tech for 28 years has an idea of what is happening. He found a little bit of play in part of the steering shaft. He feel that when the car is in a turn and hits a bump just right there is enough lateral force to cause those parts in the steering shaft to wiggle together causing the rattle and the steering wheel is acting as an amplifier amplifying the rattle. He named the parts but I can't remember what they were called.
In the end he said it is a design flaw and there really is nothing he can do to stop the noise short of redesigning the steering shaft. He said he can not use any foam or something to cushion the parts because they have to move together for steering. He did say if Volvo gets enough people complaining about this that they may come up with a fix at the factory lever and put out a service bulletin. If so he will call me but I'm not holding my breath. I guess I/we will have to live with this noise.
I feel he honestly tried to fix this. They put like 40 miles test driving the car getting it to act up. I can also tell the took apart the wheel and column so they are not just blowing smoke up ass.
It's unfortunate but I think we are stuck with this problem.

Does that mean our cars are lemons and that we can get a new one?

At least in Colorado the lemon laws have so many holes in them it is almost impossible to get one under the law. It has tobe a driveability problem that leave the car inoperable. They will laugh at our rattle complaint and kick us out the door because rattles do not count as defects.

Never heard this in my 07, hope I don't ever. If it that bad of an issue maybe you can go to a stereo shop and see of the can install some dynamat safely around the steering collum. Only thing about that is I may be worried about safety issues in the event the steering collum needs to collapse or deploy the airbag.
