Re: Problem with 6 CD Changer In Dash. It's not reading CDs (v8race)

This has happened to me once before. I turned the radio off then I turned the key to off for about a minute. Then I turned the key back on then turned the radio on. After a few seconds I started ejecting all the cd's one by one until it was empty. I then reloaded one by one and have not had any issues since.
The cd I had a problem with was one that I recorded myself. I still play that cd at times and all is good.
Hope that helps.

are you sure what you are putting in is actually a CD? a lot of music sold these days does not meet CD specifications and has warning lables on the package saying "may not be compatible with CD chagers, car stereos, etc etc"

Re: (ig_mb)

Thats a good point. What are the record companies doing nowadays? Adding more restrictions? You know this stuff drives more illegal P2P downloads?
I wish the CD changer supported MP3 playback.

There have been issues with the 90 not reading CD-R's that are not specifically marked audio... Also, I have noticed certain CD's that are bought from discount clubs (i.e. BMG, columbia house, costco) are reproduced on substandard discs. These will also occasionally not play on the 90's player.

I carry Data CDs burned as audio in my cars to avoid any stranger trying to steal my originals. If they do, they get the copy. Anyways, they play just fine.

I actually haven't heard about it for awhile. I am recalling it was the first couple of years 03/04... I am not sure if the problem has continued or not. It may have been adressed in a software update or ????

I should've finished reading the original post: he said he has tried a bunch of different CD's. That's probably not the issue then...
Time for a trip to the dealer!

I carry Data CDs burned as audio ...

Let me apologize in advance if I'm adding more confusion to the mix, but here are a few things to keep in mind:
* a CD marked as "Data CD" can accept a data image as well as an audio image.
* a CD marked as "Audio CD" means that the price of the CD includes a royalty "tax", which is why CDs marked as "Audio CD" are more expensive. At some point, they had a hardcoded bit somewhere in a header so they could only accept audio images (ie, no data) but I doubt if they are doing this anymore.
* CDs marked as "Audio CD" are always guaranteed to be able to hold 80 minutes of music. CDs marked as "Data CD" do not have any size guarantee.
* There is absolutely NO difference in quality between a CD marked "Data CD" and a CD marked "Audio CD", so there is NO reason to buy CDs marked "Audio CD".
* The image burnt on the CD can be of (at least) two different types: audio (containing PCM samples @ 44.1KHz) or data (containing files, folders, etc).
* Unless converted appropriately, MP3 files are burnt *always* as regular files (ie, data images).
* Up to MY06, The XC90 CD player only plays audio images (eg, PCM). MY07 and onwards apparently also play MP3 files.
So, bottom line, buy "Data CDs" and burn "audio images" for the XC90.
If you burn your own CDs, do not apply any labels! Labels may become unglued inside the player and jam the CDs inside.

How many miles you got!?!?
I would think you'd still be under warranty if you're not really piling them on...

Warranty (if any) is your help. It does happen, not only to Volvo, but to other brands too.

Re: Problem with 6 CD Changer In Dash. It's not reading CDs (v8race)

We had the problem with the CD changer within a few months of buying our 05 XC 90. First it would suddenly stop and we got the "Disk error" message. Now I was using original store bought CDs that were absolutely clean! At that point shutting the car and then restarting would cure the problem. Then we got the "Deck error" message and nothing would fix it.
When you get this message immediately attempt to remove your CDs. If not, they may get stuck and the dealership will not attempt to remove them. The changers are sent to Sweden, and so it may take a few weeks to get your CDs back.
In our case, we rescued our CDs, went to the dealer, and replaced the changer under warranty (~ 30 minute job).

The 6 disk CD changer was DOA upon delivery of the car. It was replaced under warranty a short time later and I've had no further problems. Most of what we use are copies of store bought music CD's. The copies are burned onto cheap data CDs and they all work perfectly. I've never tried using labels on burned CDs, and would recommend against taking a chance with them on any CD whether it is used for music or for data. A fine point permanant marker is great for labeling CDs. You enjoy the music or use the data that is recorded on the disk, not the label, so labels seem to be to be a pointless and possibly problematic frill.

Re: (sol)

I agree. There are two reasons I copy every CD:
* just in case the CD changer eats a CD, it will not be one that I care too much about.
* to put the CD-text info, [on the soapbox]something that should be included on every manufactured CD but the manufacturers are more interested in preventing everyone from doing reasonable things with CDs and DVDs instead of adding this very simple and trivial piece of info. Ok, got that off my chest...[getting off the soapbox]
