Ladies and Gentlemen, need some help please. Over the last week or so, I have a new noise coming from the rear of my car. It is a very low pitched, oscilating at times, noise that increses in volume and rate of oscilation with speed. I have inspected my tires and rims, no damage founds. I re-torqued the lugs, all were fine. I checked infation, fine as well. Tire wear lookes even. I don't remember hitting any killer pot holes and gave the spanish inquisition to my partner, because he had the car recently for a day, no hits.
The only thing I found was a post on the angle gear posted by BlkT5inNM in which something similar is described. Does anyone else have any ideas on what this noise could be. Of course I'm out of town and nowhere near my volvo dealer. Will it hurt to drive 300 miles home? And if I want a loaner, will surely be at least two weeks before they can see me anyway.
Thanks for everyone's help in advance. This is actually the first thing that has gone "wrong" with my '05 since the '04 was repurchased and replaced by Volvo.

Re: Problem - new noise! searched can't find (TurboACE)

Does it get louder if you turn in one direction over the other?
I'm guessing bad wheel bearing. Known problem (regardless of mileage). I had one go at 28,000 miles.
I'd have the dealer check it straightaway.

I agree but you may as well (try to) drive it home

Re: Problem - new noise! searched can't find (JRL)

JRL - Thanks, I have not noticed if it is louder turning one or the other direction. It really doesn't start to become audiable until over about 45 mph. If it is a wheel bearing, what happens when they fail? You said, try to, drive home? Just curious. Thanks for you help.

I drove on mine for about 200 miles. It started off pretty unnoticable, then got progressively louder until my wife noticed it too.
I brought it in and had it checked out....bad wheel bearing, but no ill effects on anything else, and I haven't noticed any abnormal wear or wobbling since it was fixed.

At some point it will seize but as was said, nothing else can get hurt so I would drive it right to your dealer as that process can take awhile.
Failure will be speed related so take it as slowly as possible, (ie: no driving at 90).
