Probable New XC90 I-6

In this month's Rolling magazine there is a description of a new In-Line six that will be an optional engine in the new S80. I think we can be pretty assured that this same engine will be offered in the XC90.

For those that aren't members of VCOA I'll give you a summary. The new engine is designed by Volvo and is made entirely of aluminum. It will have 3.2 liter displacement with normal aspiration. It will generate 232 bhp and 221 lb/ft of torque. It has been designed to be mated to the new six-speed automatic tranmission. It will be built in Ford's modern engine factory in Brigend, Wales.

The valvetrain features variable cam timing and cam profile switching (CPS) on the inlet side. These are 2 key elements in producing an engine with excellent drivability and flexibility.

CPS means that the camshaft is designed such that the inlet valves are lifted to two different heights depending on engine speed and load. CPS in principle creates two engines in one by meeting the needs of the drivers who want performance as well as those as those more interested in driving comfort and fuel economy.

Variable intake system (VIS) has been equipped with two throttle flap valves which adjust the manifold volume to suit the current driving situation. The result is a uniformly high and broad torque curves.

The new engine has an integrated drive system with shaft-in-shaft design. The ancillaries such as the power steering pump and AC compressor are located in a space above the gearbox they are driven by gears at the rear end of the crankshaft. This engineering solution is known as rear end ancillary drive or READ. The alternator is direct driven and installed on the engine block.

So Yannis, will there be an answer to bmw's new 3.0 turbo? I suspect there is..

Whether there is or not, I do not believe Volvo's concern is to keep up with that engine or BMW, for that matter.
