Quick question for the board.

What are the thoughts around preventive fluid changes?

1. Coolant? Every two years? Flush or no flush? Do you need to use distilled water (mixed with anti-freeze or course)?

2. Gear box? Are people using Volvo oil or Redline etc?

3. Differential? Haldex? Any special oil?

Sorry for the nature of these questions, but coming from the BMW world where the "lifetime" fill fluid myth is alive, I'm curious. Every decent independent BMW mechanic always recommend changing the fluids (esp gear box oil) and using only distilled water mixed with BMW antifreeze to avoid the aluminum radiators to fail.

I'm not privy to the BMW cult, but you should use distilled water in any modern cooling system. I don't like to leave any coolant charge in for more than three years, not because of chemical breakdown, but because no system is fully sealed, and dirt gets in over time. Coolant is cheaper than water pumps.

That looks interesting. I especially found the comment about mechanics installing it at 60k to be interesting. Have anybody heard about that for our cars?

Manual 6 speed, the factory fluid seems fine to me.
I've used RedLine in the 5 speeds with little to no difference.
GT auto use the (recommended) Mobil synthetic ONLY

Thanks. Is the gearbox oil change interval specified? 60k? 80k?

I agree on the Redline, but I have seen it remove some "nothiness", especially with a short shifter, on other cars (not Volvo).

For the M56 or M66 I would stay with the Volvo fluid. I think it
is hard to find by others in that it is sythetic GL-4 where all the modern
gear oil by Mobile1 is Gl-5 and not recommend for GL-4 application

Do you mean NOTCHINESS?
No fluid interval change in the Volvo service manual, you're supposed to run the same dirty fluid for 200,000 miles

Yes - I do!

Lifetime fill. Gotta love it - it's lifetime until the gearbox fails, I guess.

I saw below someone recommended 35k. That sounds pretty early. I guess I'll settle for 60 or so K.

Someone here said he is using a Redline product in the angle gear. What was that, and what does Volvo recommend? Other opinions?

60K would be too late. Do not let the evil "lifetime fluid" maintanance corporations tell you to keep sheared down, dirty, metal shaving filled milkshake sause in the gearbox until 60K

Maybe when I said 35K that is a bit early but when you use fresh oil things
tend to shift nicer and smoother so it is ok for me and worth it.

From what I have been told 40-45 K and it is worn down and spent

I know many people who do their Bimmer or Porsche gearbox at 20K. Gearbox problems are not fun and very expensive

Lifetime fluid my butt

Old thread, I know, but I'm trying to find this out right now and didn't see an answer.

Does anyone use the lightweight or heavy shockproof oil in the diff?

Yes, with Volvo coolant mixed 50-50 with distilled water.
Ditto for brake system. complete flush and fill with synthetic DOT4.

2. Gear box? Are people using Volvo oil or Redline etc?

Just did this job with all Volvo oils w/pix!
Lifetime oil? Volvo should be ashamed...

I'd say every 50K miles

3. Differential? Haldex? Any special oil?
