Warning, long post alert (not a newbie here; just haven't posted in a while):
So we just got back from a trip to Canada, which ended with a stay in Montreal. While parked at the old '67 World's Fair grounds, I was walking back from a short picnic lunch to my '04 XC90 where I noticed two guys parked next to me in the otherwise nearly-deserted parking lot. One guy was standing next to the back of his minivan putzing around with some tools, the other standing next to my front passenger door. They acted strange as I hopped into my truck and backed away, and I soon realized why. Turns out they tried to break into my truck, which had the Volvo security glass option (laminated side windows). Upon closer examination, they had hit the passenger window SEVEN times with a hammer, but ended up only cracking the outer window glass laminate. Inside was my wife's purse, cell phone, DVD player, and a truck full of luggage and expensive ski gear. Not sure if they were going after the cargo or the truck itself, but they couldn't get in (at least not on their first try). Although I'm faced with a high deductible for replacing the door window, I'm more than relieved for what could have happened and will never pass up an opportunity to add the security glass option.
The only thing I wish, other than not having the attempted theft happen in the first place, was to have seen the expressions on the jerks' faces when they kept beating at the glass and realized they couldn't break in. I hope the hammer bounced back and hit them in the face. They were probably going through their tool box to find a bigger tool to swing at the glass when I interrupted them.
Thanks, Volvo.

Nope, windows weren't tinted. Standard security glazing. Makes it easier to see the spidered window cracks in the outer pane.

It's bad everywhere. Anything left exposed in the passenger compartment is an invitation for some idiot to attempt a 'smash and grab'. Happend to me with my S80. If you park downtown or at a mall parking lot - beware.

Too bad that you did not get the [self-censored - bleep!] license plate number on the [self-censored] minivan!

Door window is being replaced today, cost of over $500. Funny: I paid $250 for the entire security glass option via the overseas delivery program (you could separate out the glass option back then; don't know if you can still do it).
Deductible is $500. Still, VERY much worth it!!

One glass window plus labor is $500? I guess that's about right, I got quoted for $302 just for the heat reflecting, water repelling, laminated glass window.

Just a thought.... Montreal being a port city with ships departing for key 'pre-owned' car markets, like Africa, probably makes it more likely to get your car stolen there.

Re: Praises for Security Glass Option (ss60)

Yeah, really glad they didn't get through the glass. Talk about the problems with trying to make our way back if the truck and contents were stolen! After the incident, my father reminded me that a good friend of his was murdered in Montreal a few years ago, after surprising two guys who were breaking into his car. They caught the guys 6 months later; apparently they targeted U.S. cars, because it was rare that anyone would return to prosecute a stolen car or break-in case. An agent at the border told us that a U.S. friend of his had a car stolen two weeks earlier, while parked at the Montreal airport.
Guess everyone starts to tell you their tales after they hear your story.
But, Montreal is a beautiful and fun city with a (mostly) friendly population, great sites, and great food. There are bad problems in every urban (and rural) area. New York used to be very bad, parts of Newark, NJ still are. We'll be back to Montreal, but we'll be more careful.

Can you post pictures of the busted up window, or email them to me please?

I thought the security glass was just a way of saying tinted windows so no one could see in. I didn't think it was thicker or reinforced glass.
edit: scratch that, I'm thinking of privacy glass.
