Hey All.
My Power steering has gone out.... it is eating a bottle of fluid every 5-10 miles. It seems that the driver side Boot on the rack has spilt at the clamp point. The lower section seems to be separated with about a 5mm tear. I am in the middle of now where in the black hills of SD.

Any Help???
Thanks In Advance.
update:
volvo on care just told me the closest dealer was 570 miles away in montana... that would be over 1000 .miles from my college...
so yea anyone with an idea please help. o am going to try stop leak tomorrow when napa is open. I made it about twenty miles to sturges to a friends grandmas house were we are spending the night till a store opens. then I need to make it 100miles so it can get towed to a more acceptable location. we have a trailer and truck with us but its enclosed and I am sure the mirrors would have to be removed so the car could fit. but then all the camera gear would not fit nor the atvs. this really blows with two finals on monday. dammit...

Duct tape? Electrical tape? If its a rubber boot that has split and is leaking, maybe taping it up will allow you to get to a couple thousand mile range, so you can take it wherever is best for you. Sucks to hear, but good luck on ur finals!!

The mirrors fold in such that they are no longer the widest part of the car. I bet it will fit fine.

Sounds like you've lost the seal on the rack. The boot isn't there to seal the rack to keep the hydraulic fluid in, it just keeps dirt out of the rack mechanism. However, if it was cracked and let dirt in, then that is a probable cause why the seal failed. When you pour new fluid in, does it leak at the rack, the pump, or hte reservoir?
Once you get the car to the dealer, they will most likely want you to replace the rack.
Are you sure there's no one close by that can do that for you? You will have to drop the subframe to get to it, so it's not like it's a total DIY thing.
Theoretically you could drive to the dealer without the power boost, it will just take a lot of effort to steer. Hopefully the pump won't burn up in the meantime.
When we replaced the rack on our S80 it was about $1800.
Best of luck.

Re: Power Steering Issues... Need Help (JPL Guy)

well we got seven inches of snow today... so I do not see my self getting under the car. luckly I have a cpo so at least I do not have to pay the 1800... as it looks now I will use stop leak as it has to be the rack. with all the snow I think the trailer is out of the question.
thanks guys

You may want to be cautious using something like Stop Leak. Volvo may use that as a way to deny your warranty claim.
Doesn't Volvo On-Call tow it to the nearest Volvo dealer, be it 5 miles or 500 miles?

Well the car is gone, The tow company... I mean a guy with a trailer picked it up... dragging the bumper up the ramps. So Hopefully Its fixed with out major hassles.
As for the stop leak, I am sure it is going to be fine with the warranty as I did not see it labeled in clear view as I can not do it. I would fight that in a second flat.
Volvo tows to the closest dealer. That being said in the Western part of South Dakota Montana is closer in fact I was only 50-100 miles away from the cut off to tow to Omaha. I am sure the rack and Pump are shot anyways since I had to drive some 60 miles to a location since I am sure no tow company would drive in to the Black Hills, in fact most roads were closed to semis and trailers. and all I had was GPS coordinates to go by. I do not think the road was even labeled... It was only a service road.
so now my car is off and I get to spend more money that will never get reimbursed... I am still waiting from January and every time I call i get the run around... I have 5 outstanding Tow Reimbursements... AAA pays the next day.
