Is it possible to 'hot-wire' the lighter socket in an '06 V70R? My wife charges her phone a lot and it's a nuisance that it shuts off with the car. Actually, ditto for the power seat controls. Do the swedes have some irrational fear about dead batteries? Thanks...

Actually, my VW, Saab, BMW and every Japanese car you can think of had/have these items available with the car off. Additionally, most European cars allow you to run the radio without the key even being in the ignition. That's why I find this car so strange.

What do you mean by "covered"? My 2005 doesn't allow me to move the seats when the car is off.

I have the cargo outlet. I installed it myself and it is only powered when key is on. During the install I had to run a new power cable for it from the Rear Elect module. After I ran it I realized there was already a power wire there. So I tried it and it didn't work. What gives. I used the new cable I ran and it works fine, but only when the key is in.

When it's 45C below (or -70 factoring in windchill) it IS a rational fear.
I guess if your battery is dead due to charging your phone at least your phone will be alive so you can call for help

I have an 2005 V70R with a factory power cargo outlet. The outlet is always ON.
If you remove the key, while there is still anything drawing current, (greater than approx. 100 mA), you will get this display in the DIM.

Well LTA just gotta do what my brother-in-law did when he was living in yellowknife, wire a battery tender up to your block heater http://********************/smile/emthup.gif that way you should always be good to go.
As for the constant power argument, my VW has a power button on the stereo to run it without a key in the ignition, can't remember about my MB but I think it's the same story. However, what Jim Lill mean't was that back in 2003 these issues were covered on the forum, and may infact be in the FAQ, search, and make sure to select archived content. (sorry to be one of those gus, but hey, it works)

If you R is still under warrany, this is probably a really
good question for your dealer...
There are several practical solutions to your problem,
but you might run into warrany issues...Not Sure...

The Honda Odyssey will let the radio play for about 10 min. after the key is taken out of the ignition. I remember this because my mom used to "sit" in her car all the time.

Here's the deal- Get a fuse holder, a couple of the appropriate connectors,
and some wire. Run a lead from the battery to cigarette lighter and, Voila!
That's the guerilla version. There is also an "Accessory" connector swinging
around under the dash that provides up to 20amps on the 98's.
I don't know if the tradion was continued in later years, but we older
R owners have the following:
Pin outs:
Connector (for accessories)
Position Connection Max. load
1 Battery + (30) 20 A
2 X Supply 0,5 A
3 High beam 1 A
4 1 A
5 1 A
6 Rheostat 0,5 A
7 2 A
8 Earth (31) -
From Page 105 of the 98 70 series owners manual.
You can find a constant 12 volt source in plenty of places,
just try to keep it safe, clean and fused at the source.
