My dealer says the potholes in LA have caused my front right strut to leak. Doesn't think it will be covered by warranty ($850). This happen to anyone else?
Thanks in advance (no pun intended).

Did you bend a wheel?
If not, there is NO WAY they can say for sure a pothole broke it (unless you told them you hit a pothole)

Re: Potholes = strut leak? (JRL)

Didn't bend a wheel that I can see but I will take a closer look. About a year ago I hit a really bad pothole that took out two tires AND wheels (on the same side as this). What else could do it? Wear and tear (38,000 miles)?

What I'm saying is that if they do not know you been hiting potholes it should be a warranty item. This is not wear but leakage

Another question; would spring, strut, sway bar upgrades help with this in the future?

There are no STRUT upgrades

Then it's a pretty simple guess that the suspension was subjected to a very hard impact.
Although a grossly bent piston rod would be easy to detect while the part is on the car, one normally needs to remove the shock and work it through its range to detect damage of this sort.

The fronts are STRUTS
(Fancy name for a different style of shock)

You're right, looking at VADIS, they are cleary a strut design. My bad.
However, the part is listed as "shock absorber".
Hrmph.

So is your dealer suggesting that the potholes in LA have damaged your car?
Since potholes are a way of life in LA, and any American road or highway, are Volvos not suitable for LA or the American highways?
If you hit a pothole large enough to damage the shock, there would be visible damage to the shock, and certainly to the tire and rim!

Re: Potholes = strut leak? (rogersampson)

If you hit a hole hard enough to "break the shock" you also would have a busted rim and a blown tire.
If it's leaking but NOT BENT they MUST replace it under warranty
If it's BENT (actually considered an accident, sort of ) you can claim that under insurance (if you want to)

You need to have a word with your dealer that is ludicrous, I am in Santa Monica and have had both front shocks and a mess of other suspension components replaced in the past 8 weeks under warranty. If you drive on Santa Monica Blvd in West LA (Sepulveda -Bev Hills) you need to be really careful I have lost a handful of wheels and tires to that road since buying my R.

Re: strut damage

I took the car in (to Galpin Volvo) friday. They left a message that the shop forman would look at the car and see if the warranty will cover it (I will ask for a rep if they say no). I will post again on Monday after I hear from them.

Galpin says warranty will cover strut damage (after I said I didn't buy the pothole thing). No argument from them.
