Some folks have no respect for other people's property, I swear. Long story short, in the 30 days I've been working here (and forced to use my R as a DD) I've incurred 6 (yes, six) dings on the side of my car. I *thought* I was parking high enough in the garage to avoid the idiots, but apparently not. So, now I am going to park on the freakin' roof (NO ONE parks up there...my car is the sole car on the roof), and I have a question for you all.
How should I protect my car from sun damage over the next three years of parking it on the roof? Dash pad? Car Cover? Don't worry about it, as 3 years isn't enough time to really do any damage? Only reason I ask is I have a 1989 Ranger as my DD in the States (leaving the R in the garage). This is the first time the R will sit outside all day, every day, in the sun. I just don't want to have some (further) damage, and hear "ahh, you shoulda done ____"
Any input? BTW, I hate people. I really do. Only here would someone driving a 911 Carrera ding your car with his door. Seriously, WTF...
-Steve

Re: Potential for sun damage? (FORD420diesel)

Well, I've used mine for 2 years as a DD and it's outside all the time. In the summer I use a sun shade, vent the sunroof and partially close that sliding cover and I have the rear window shade that I pull up. I haven't noticed much sun damage.
To be fair, it is Holland.. not Texas or Vegas.. so it's not nearly as hot.

Sounds good, I'll have to get one of those sun shades! And yeah, it's not nearly as hot here as it was in Hell Paso, that's very true.
-Steve

I would use a sun shade that opens up on the windshield. My blue stitching faded significantly.
The other thing that happens (for '04 Rs, not you) is that the black plastic trim on the body starts to fade and become striated.
Mine spent 4 years in South Florida though so the effects of the sun were magnified.

I would do something.
At the minimun buy a window sun shade but to really protect, (and this IS a real PIA) is to buy AND USE, a car cover every day.
If your car is anything but black, the paint WILL start to fade a bit, not to mention, the interior, carpets plus all the environment crap that will find its way on the paint, (not to mention the occasional bird who will love to ruin your paint).
Personally I would park one level down and use a dent doctor every 6 months, if necessary.
The other thing you can buy are these magnetic foam pieces that you put on each door for the idiots to open their doors into.

If you decide to go with a sunshade, or even if you need a quality shade, I use this one:
http://www.autosportcatalog.co...d=169
Its custom fit and works really well. I have one for my XC also, great product.

Keeping a good coat of wax on the car should help the paint as well...

I would put a lockable car cover on the car, and take all the valve cores out of the porsches tires, then put the valve stem caps back on. no real damage, but im sure he wont know whats wrong, and probably incur a tow bill....

well he cant arrest you so dont worry. and if he did that would be throw out of court and he might be suspended for abuse of police power. he might call up some of his buddies and they could come tell you to turn it down, but seeing you said 4PM i doubt there are any City Ordinances, HOA by-law, Condo Assoc. Restictive Covenants, or Renters Rules and Regulations that say no noise at 4 in the afternoon. this is hours before Civil Twilight and just no way that is resonable. so next time tell him if he says one more thing your going to sure him for Harrasment. i work in Real Estate, you have certain rights as a Homeowner (this included renting and condos) that cant be F*cked with.

Re: Potential for sun damage? (FORD420diesel)

Just so you know my friend is a paint and body expert and I discussed this problem with him at length after my first "parking in an apartment complex friday night experience, when someone came along in their party car and opened both of their doors on my car on my drivers side"..Luckily only the clear coat was scratched....after that I am now keeping it safe.....
But to address your concern, he also informed me that the door edges as well as the hood edges, etc.......are the thinnest part of the paint on the car so everytime someone does that they are risking damaging their car as well and possibly chipping the sides of their own door, so to identify your culprit just look at their drivers side or passenger doors and look for the "Oops sorry dude chip on my doorseams guy"
