First off, I have never owned a Volvo and have never owned a vehicle that has a turbo in it. My wife is intent on driving the 2006 S40 T5 as oppose to the 2.4i.

First question would be, do you have to run premium grade fuel in the T5 or can you just run 87 octane?

Next.. What kind of gas mileage should I expect to get from this vehicle. My wife will be the primary driver and will be traveling 80 miles round trip per day with 75 of those miles being interstate.

I guess I should appologize for these "amatuer" questions but I figured this would be the place to get some answers. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Re: Possibly going to purchase a S40 T5. Have a few questions. (Widgeonus)

The T5 is a very nice car...you can run 87 octane; however, you may compromise performance slightly. Unfortunately I can't remember what the compression ratio is for the T5..which helps answer the question technically.

If she is driving mostly freeway; I would be comfortable with mid-grade. Considering you dont require a lot of acceleration on the freeway. Only on the entrance ramp.

If she is conservative on the accelerator pedal, I could see about 26MPG+

Have you test drove other vehicles? Audi, Acura, VW, Subaru?

A wife that prefers a Turbo..nice http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Actually, I work offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and haven't even seen one with my own two eyes yet. All I have seen is pictures. Would it hurt anything to run 87 in it? She is driving a Yukon right now and we want to get something that gets better gas mileage. She has always wanted a Volvo since high school and now I can afford to give her one.

It won't hurt anything (in fact, Volvo even went through a phase of recommending regular unleaded fuel as a cure -- which it wasn't -- for a problem known as "S-S-S"), but you'll likely give some fuel economy away by running it. Everybody's got an opinion, but I think the general wisdom is that it's about a wash between the money you save per fillup by using regular grade, and the extra gas you'll burn doing so. Might as well put premium in and enjoy the most the engine has to offer.

As far as economy to expect overall (assuming premium), the car is equally capable of getting great economy and terrible. On long stretches of freeway, at-speed driving, it will easily see high 20's to low 30's, if not better. Around town, with mostly urban driving, lots of short trips with stoplights and such, you're likely to see the occasional tank in the 16's if you've got a heavy foot, and probably more likely around 18 if you don't.

I have a 2.4i, I run regular gas and get 28mpg running mostly interstate, hilly at that that. Your wife could expect better running the flat highway of Lousiana...
There have been threads discussing mpg, and if I recall correctly turbo owners reported slightly better mileage (don't recall the grade of fuel) than the non-turbo.
If you have children, consider a V50. It's the same platform of the S40 with more room.
as an aside, you work gas or oil ? and, are you off-shore right now??

o my god, somebody else from Louisiana!!

I live in Baton Rouge, go to school, then drive the interstate for work and sutff, and I average about 22-24 mpg. But the T5 is much better on the highway than in the city, so the car would be great for your circumstance.

I work on a drill ship so technically am on the oil AND gas side of things. Yes, I am currently offshore working the second week of my two week rotation.

smart woman, wants a turbo. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif compression ratio is 9:1 and while the motor management system will adjust itself at cost of performance for 87, you're better off spending the extra few cents and getting 91-93.

My dad is looking to buy me an s40, he says the t5's insurance is like 2 times as high as the 2.4i's. Whis happens to be the only thing keeping him away from the t5. He hasn't got an official quote yet, but i want the t5 so bad!

It's not twice as expensive. Not even close.
