15mm per side was fine. Not too much at all. And I had 235 tires instead of the standard 215. That helped as well to improve the wider look. Tried to find photo's but can't find them anywhere...

The front is already quite wide on the XC70. So didn't bother.

Yours was a V70 P3 model? No steering issues? Was it AWD? True, the fronts already have a wide look. Try to find the pics please. Perhaps in an old forum once?

LOOKS GREAT!! Told it was easy, and almost fun. Did you try leaving the side strips black with the side scuff aluminumy? The metallic side strip was the first thing I dipped, as it seemed the most out-of-place piece on the car. But I did think the side scuff plate would be a bit much in black..

I left my grill in and masked it off. I only did the outer edge and the slash, so I masked off the whole thing. That was not fun to tape up. But I have all the electronics in mine and didn't want mess with it.

How many coats of black did you do on each piece? Looks like it came out great.

Did some dipping this weekend myself.

Front and rear valences dipped black. No idea why I waited this long to do this!!
Wow, nice job. you may have convinced me to try dipping on my black '09.

I don't want the red back!! I don't understand the purpose of those anyway
I agree with the red looking strange covered up. That's the one thing that looks like it isn't supposed to be covered- like painted windows. There ARE bulb holders in there. When I get VIDA, I might look into making them work so at least they're doing something.

One question on dipping: do you guys mask off the honeycomb grilles around the fog lights or will it peel off of that?

There are?! When I first saw them, I thought they were the rear fogs. Then when I turned on the fogs and walked around, I found only the drivers side to be it (which if you only have one fog light is the correct one).

Hummm I might have to dig into VIDA too!

Came out awesome! Realy took my time in the IKEA P GARAGE!!

That metallic side strip was a pain to peel around! Somehow!?? Made it metallic at the end.

No I did not try only side strip black and rest chrome. Realy having a hard time with the side!! May end up with a chrome side after all. Realy the chrome looks nice. Loved the sidescuff from day one. Will consider "sidescuff chrome only"... Good thinking. First I will try to peel CROSS COUNTRY.

Realy took my time today... Nice and easy tuesday morning all alone at IKEA. Took alot of time spraying the bottom of all the skidplates. Had found a great strategy; bought 4 cans and used the full/new one first for the bottom so you can spray upside down!! Remaining dip was for the easy access parts.

Also awesome masking stuff; plastic with a painters tape edge... Realy easy to use.

Sprayed 5 layers total... Waited 30 min in between. Could not find any errors today. Still convincing myself on the rear. Hope it will all come together after the strip and perhaps dipping the badges black iso smoke. Smoke on the badges and a black strip is not easy... Very close together.

Can I dip black over smoke dip or peel first?? I call myself since today an expert... Getting good at it!

May consider bringing the red reflectors back!! Miss them. They are very dark red... Would look good.

I replaced the 2011 with 2014 and for sure no bulb holders whatsoever!

Would you consider dipping front and rear skidplates too???

The fogs I covered but no need since DIP comes off in a heartbeat! Have the feeling I am on my way to a perfect dip!

Step by step... Gotta try and look... Dont try to copy. I need the inspiration from others but the end result will have my DNA all over it. Pics asap... Standby

Update: problem I had was that after peeling the overspray on the XC plastic... it took off so much dirt that the plastic looked like new.

Saw the difference of where the dip had been compared to the "weathered" plastic. Hope this will balance itself soon. Not too bad though.

THIS THREAD IS ROCKING...PUMPED SOME AIR IN IT...TALKING ABOUT ALL KINDSA STUFF...NICE FOR A CHANGE. CHATROOM!! Mega Hijack...

Well I have an '09, but yes, mine has holders. They look to be for 194/W5W type bulbs, so they're just sidemarkers.

I mostly wanted to do something with the silver around those reflectors in the bumper (and match whatever I did in the front). I was thinking of replacing them with the all black from the Classic, but the dip looks pretty good and isn't so much of an investment if I don't like it.

I wasn't sure about the skid plates, as I thought it would look weird, but I think this post has convinced me. It looks great, imo.

Happy but some say its starting to look like a V70? On this pic it looks nice but it does make it look much smaller from a distance damn it. May peel today...

Will first do the rest black, emblems and alum strip and then make the decision. To peel or not to peel...

By the way the color of the dip is called; Hijack-Black! It came out yesterday!

You're a dipping addict now!

Looks great.

My preferences:

Reflectors dipped black
chrome strip on lower doors black
scuff plate non-dipped?

Scuff just undipped... Strip undipped--will dip again (or put black tape for comparison) -but somehow creates a balance with the scuff!!

Emblems and trunk strip black iso smoke.

May even undip the rear plate... Looks nice but also V70 and not as wide.

Front with grill will look good but may undip front skid too!!!

Update; will be left with:

GRILL
EMBLEMS
EYEBROWS
FRAME AROUND REFLECTORS

Black makes the XC70 look too small imho... If all black that is... Some parts NEED to be black however.

Looks awesome on the pics but in reality it doesnt! I hate to say this since I had so much work in it... I have to be honest. All the pics I found look great but walking away from mine in reality: not so sure at all!! A bit of a sad day for me.

I'm not sure what I'm reading here. What don't you like? Just peel it off and leave it stock.

I'm loving mine. It doesn't look smaller to me, but it looks more cohesive and sinister. I will say, I don't think the dip on the rear skid plate will hold up too well to the stuff kicked up from the road at high speed.

First of all, on your car it looks fantastic from every corner!!! Also on other pics it looks great but... in reality it makes the look of the XC70 dissapear and looses its offroad-look. But again, just my opinion. Trust me, spraying one afternoon and peeling the next is a bit frustrating to say the least. I will continue to dip but not too much of the car. Yours before (!) the skid dip looked also great...with the skids in "chrome". Cant say I didnt try...

After the dip I walked away from it, far far away and turned around quickly to see the look. That is the moment for me to continue with or not. I turned around and was expecting the look from the pictures but thought: Hhmmmm. (Read: Peel)

It's all a matter of preference! That's what makes this so much fun. And also why I like the dip vs. painting pieces permanently. Granted the colors don't match up as well as picking a specific paint color or hue.

I'm going to leave mine as it is for now, but the only reason I may peel the front and rear plates is because the dip may not stand up to the road conditions, particularly when salt starts to fly with the snow and ice. What also sucks is I'll have to peel if off before I sell it., or at least some of it. This is personal preference and definitely isn't for everyone.
