re the recent discussion about the R "pops" and whether or not it was "engineered" into the car: check out Peter Egan's column ("Side Glances") in the May Road & Track (sorry, no link because May doesn't seem to be on their web site yet!); it's about Jaguar and the trouble they went to to get the correct, and slightly different, "Jaguar Sound" into the
new XK. Seems to be little doubt that the "R sound" was massaged into our cars--fine with me; I like it!

I like the pop too. The exhaust sound has turned into such an important part of the engineering process. I remember reading about the original Miata and how the engineers looked at numerous exhaust designs until they found the right one. Listen to the exhaust for the FX35 or Infinity coupe- probably my favorite OEM exhaust sound.

It is so easily identifiable out of a crowd, it's insane (or at least my wife thinks I'M insane when I point it out in a passing group of cars.
What's interesting is that that engine is used in SO many vehicles (pathfinder, Xterra, Altima, Quest, Frontier, Murano) and the exhaust note for those cars is so much different. They only want the sportiness on the sporty cars, I guess.

I agree and think it was designed to sound that way. There are two cars with exhaust sounds that I can't stand! 1. Mid-80's Cavalier Z24 and 2. the new Infinitis (G and FX), automatics are especially bad when the driver kind of pushes it and holds it right before a shift it's such an incredibly annoying sound!
Thank you Volvo for the R 'sound'.
LTA
Run a mix of 92/100 octane at 2:1 and you'll see a noticeable drop in the frequency of the popping.
IMO it occurs due to the adaptive knock sensor and retarding spark advance/fuel dumping at detonation thresholds.

You get the pop when you accelerate and change gears, letting off the gas quickly- you hear a very audible pop some times.

Re: "Pops" and the R sound (willyjp)

I too found the backfire (pop) annoying. Otherwise, I like the sound, though the aftermarket cat back that I will soon install will change it a bit.
As for the popping - Monday I installed the BSR software via the PPC and guess what! NO MORE POPPING! Also, for those who were worried about the 1st and 2nd gear performance with the BSR upgrade, I found that the car screams in both first and second and is even bettter in the upper gears. It really woke the car up!

Re: "Pops" and the R sound (OwlsInBog)

The R sounds amazing with an exhaust, it's a deep burble turbo sound. Amazing under hard throttle. As for most annoying sounding car, try any subaru boxer with or with out an exhaust. sounds like a lawn mower with the choke stuck on. That's why I chose the R over the legacy GT.
DAn

The stock exhaust sure does sound really good. This was all while keeping the RPM's under 4000 (still going easy for another while for the break in).
I can't wait to really tear into the higher RPMs and it should be even better once I bold on the EST cat-back. (I'll certainly do some a/v clips and post them).
LTA

Re: "Pops" and the R sound (LTA)

I think the VQ engine in the G35 and 350z sounds like it's farting. I had a Maxima and it was way less flatulent sounding but still sounded nice. I'm sure when you're inside the car winding it up it sounds great. Just my opinion though.

Re: "Pops" and the R sound (willyjp)

FYI, here's the old thread:
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=55471
Not to be a pedant but it's important to know the "pop" is NOT backfire, very different things! (see original thread)
A great example of this stuff is Harley Davidson. They even sued Honda, unsuccesfully, for copying the Harley 'sound'. Harley spends a LOT of effort maintaining their sound for new engine designs which might not inherently produce it.
