Anyone have any ideas or suggestions for better mileage improvements. It seems like I'm getting very poor gas mileage (I estimate around 22-24 mpg highway). I have the K&N panel but have not installed since I heard someone here said the oil can damage the MAF sensor. How about that Tornado gadget? Does that thing really work? Will replacing the fuel filter help any? The manual says replace at 105K miles but my car only has 63K miles.
That is low -- I usually see 28 -31 depending on speed, etc.
Increase your tire pressure and remove any unnecessary weight for an easy boost.

Mpg is affected by speed. What highway speed do you average?
I average about 25mpg at 75mpg highway in a stock 98 S70T5 manual w/ synthetic, but in a related post, JRL reported averaging 30mpg at 60-65, with the same model. I am going to at least try to slow down on my next road trip & see what effect it has on my overall mpg.
Here in So. Cal, as you know, gas is knocking at $4.00's door ($3.29 -$3.79...depending on the grade).
Mpg didn't matter to me when gas was in the $2 range, but now it has my attention.
Good luck on improving yours!

a well tuned machine helps....even the often overlooked things such as tire pressure can make a difference....amen on the cruise control here in Cali, just no use for this gadget...

Re: (Bender)

I have a K&N drop in filter, admittedly I do use cruise control a lot on the highway averaging right around 75mph, but I usually get around 31mpg.

I admittedly don't use the CC much either, but it is the easiest way to regulate mpg and this is how the manufacturer estimates their own mpg. The turbo is just way too much fun though!

FWIW, I've seen 30-32MPG doing 60MPH and also 22MPG doing about 80 or so in a headwind. It's not uncommon for me to touch 100+MPH on open stretches, these cars just love speed!

I'm getting 15mpg now, in suburban driving. Maybe that's something to do with lead (in my feet).

As for the K&N, IMO it is safe as long as you don't over-oil the filter.
DO NOT BUY THE TORNADO, it is a scam and you already have a turbo so why would you want some "AS SEEN ON TV" product in your finely tuned automobile??? IT DOES NOT WORK!!!
I agree with adjusting the tire pressure, it may help a little bit, but not 10 mpg. With 63,000, not sure what your issue is.

22-24 is not VERY poor, probably around average.
Are you a 5 speed or automatic?
For automatics that is about right, a 5 speed should get 28+ at 65 mph, level ground and a light foot.
Your mileage will drop dramatically if you give it even the smallest amount of fuel

40mpg reported above by darylkaiser... is pretty darn good! Corolla mileage with Volvo power & comfort!
I left my lead foot home last Saturday & on a 60 mile round trip highway run, I averaged 30mpg, with a 98t5 well maintained manual, slowing down to 65 from my avg 75mph or more, where I only averaged 24-24.
I hear a lot about weight & am not sure how much a pound here or there affects speed, but taking my 2 sons w/ a combined weight of 250 lbs for a similar run on Sunday, I dropped back to 24 mpg....
Probably safe to say your passengers/load can affect mpg also.
Interesting input from all on this topic!

previous post should read "24-25 (mpg)"
(I've seen the spelling/grammar police patrolling other posts!)

If so it may be possible but I thought we're talking about an S60 T5, btw, it's an automatic with manual geartronics. I think at best you may be able to acheive 27-28 mpg on the T5s but mines is getting about 24 at best.
