I've just been driving my V70 since December '08, so most of the 4K mileage has been cool/cold weather. With 2/3 of my driving being interstate and the other 1/3 stop & go, I'm only averaging 21.5 all-around. Is this fairly typical or will it improve after the "break-in period" (whatever that is)?
I don't lead foot, but instead play the instantaneous MPG game to see how good I can do...... obviously not very well. Perhaps I need a software adjustment at the first oil change & mtce? - Stu

Re: Poor Gas Mileage? (sapearl)

Same for me. 3250 since Jan 5 and no more than 19.3 in what I'd consider "many stops and many go's" driving throughout the day. No roadies yet, but if I head from one side of Portland to the other and stay on the freeway it'll bump it up to 20.3 'ish.

We average 20 MPG in mixed driving. I can generally get 27-28 MPG on the hwy @ 70 MPH.
Dave in VA

Well, it looks like once a do a pure road trip with no stop and go I should hit into the high 20's. Just a little disappointing for a car with 6 gears though. My old 2001 Sable which was only a 4 speed automatic and did 27 on the open road.

It's EPA rated 16 city/25 highway/20 combined. Why is everyone suprised the mileage is not great?

Call it foolish optimism on my part then. When they changed the way mileage ratings were calculated a few years back, I thought the scale swung to the side of being overly conservative since they were 10-20% too high, previously.
What I was curious about though was once the car gets upwards of 10K miles, do things change much or is it fairly consistent from the first day of ownership.

Quote, originally posted by Munin »

It's EPA rated 16 city/25 highway/20 combined. I'd love to see some reviews / links on that. my gas milage is 14.4 and 23 highway earlier this year. Car has 12,000 km on it now. hope to get better figures in summer, but I wonder if the standard Continental Tires are really that good and may be affecting fuel economy

Re: Poor Gas Mileage? (sapearl)

We have 2500 miles on our V70 and get about 20 miles to the gallon in mostly city driving with premium. We did see a significant (at least a couple of miles to the gallon) jump in efficiency sometime after we put the first thousand miles on the car.
I am curious, has anyone out there experimented with regular and/or mid grade gas? Does it make a mileage or performance difference with this car?

Re: Poor Gas Mileage? (rovermark)

Keep the faith....
My car just passed the 12,000KM mark, oil changed to synthetic now, summer tires are back on.
I can notice a nice improvement in gaz mileage since I got the car at the end of October at 4,000KM.
It does drink more than my previous V70XC but I believe it is also 750lb heavier and has almost 100hp more.

For my last turbo car I paid extra to have synthetic put in, even though Audi didn't require it.
