Performance EV brand Polestar has brought the pure-electric Polestar 2 one step closer to production, with tooling trial prototypes of the brand-new car model now rolling off the line at Geely's Luqiao facility in China. The car is Polestar's second production model after the Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid, and its first-ever pure-electric production vehicle.
With that, the Polestar 2 has entered its second prototype phase. Tooling trial prototypes, which are built on the same line where series production vehicles are to be assembled, allow automakers to verify that quality is up-to-snuff before the factory starts turning out customer cars.
The pure-electric Polestar 2 is on track to start reaching customers beginning in the first half of 2020, says Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. Customers can secure their place in line and guarantee a 2020 vehicle delivery date with a fully refundable reservation deposit. In the U.S. market, the amount needed for a deposit is $1,000.
Polestar's second production model will join the Volvo XC40, and Lynk & Co. models 01 and 02, at Geely's Luqiao factory. Meanwhile, examples of the plug-in-hybrid Polestar 1 continue to roll off the line in Chengdu, which is slated to get its own dedicated test track soon. The track will allow Polestar to evaluate and develop its vehicle models with less time and energy spent transporting them somewhere suitable - a significant gesture from an automaker whose primary stated purpose is to contribute to more sustainable motoring.
The Polestar 2 is expected to have a price tag in the neighborhood of $55,000 at launch, with a $63,000 Launch Edition available. The price of entry is expected to drop to about $45,000 after volume production gets underway and lower-priced models start rolling off the line, however. It's projected to have a driving range in the vicinity of 275 miles on the U.S. EPA test cycle.
